Have the oppertunity to go onto shifts at work. Its 4 on 4 off and after a block of 7 you get 18 days off. These will be 12 hour shifts. 2 days (7am-7pm) and 2 nights (7pm-7am).
Im currently on days which is 8am-4pm
I dont really do allot on weekends in terms of hobbies, I go to the gym most nights after work, dont really go anywhere during the week but on weekends Im out with mates doing whatever really and usually get pissed up on saturdays.
Obviously the shift work comes with a 30% payrise.
Seems a no-brainer but Im not sure If I will miss weekends too much.
What would you do?

If you've no ties etc then with 30% pay increase and 18 days off at a time its a no brainer!

I couldn't do it. You say you do nothing, but doing shifts eliminates any possibility of doing anything on most weekends. Also you will find it hard to plan anything because you'll never know when you're working without sitting down and working it out.
Still, everyones different, you might like it!

i do shifts but i only do 8 hours at a time. 5 days a week, change shift every week so it's not as bad.
i'd personally stay on the days but if you want the money then go for it.
12 hour nights are a killer though.

Will be going into my final year as a mechanical fitter apprentice. I do like days because its so easy and 8 hours fly by when you've got a decent job on. I can imagine 12 hour shifts when theres no jobs being a little boring

No way!
I have all day to myself, I don't have to commute in heavy traffic, everyone is happier on nights, plus alot less public!

Do you earn a decent amount now? If the wage isn't that amazing I'd go for the money. Can't be that hard to work out what week you're on and off to plan stuff around.....

My job can't really be done on days so I can't really compare. But having to do courses on days sucks so much. I hate it!
I realise nights is an aquired taste but it suits my lifestyle so well. I don't start until 11 so leave at 10 so it's not like some night shifts where you start at 8 or 9 and lose your evening too

Moneys ok but the extra would be very nice but I dont want to fall into the trap where you have plenty of money and no chance to spend it because you are allways working when you mates are off.

I do 5 on, 5 off, 5 on, 4 off, 4 on, 5 off, 4 on, 4 off with 12 hour shifts.
Its really good, and all the things you were going to do on the weekend, you can do during the week. Stuff like shopping is better as well, as you can go during the day instead of on the weekend when its busy.

I was doing shifts in Hotel Industry but tbh it was like 7 on, 0 off, 7 on, 0 off, 7 on, 0 off, 6 on, 1 off, 7 on, 0 off etc etc. usually all at least 10 hour shifts too.
I managed my own time but it was always so fucking busy, and in my last hotel I had a team of 30 muppets so couldn't leave them or it would go tits up.

Once you get used to them they are a piece of piss. I've been on 5 nights of 12 for last month.

What jumps out at me is you saying it is 4 on but split into 2 days and 2 nights?
I would want to see the breakdown of the shifts TBH as working time directives mean you must have 11 hours between shifts and the way they are 7-7 means at some point you will have 24 hours between your shifts anyway.
ie.
Monday 7.00-19.00.
Tuesday 7.00 - 19.00.
Wednesday 19.00 - 7.00 (thursday)
Thursday 19.00 - 7.00.
It would be interesting to know how the 4 off are calculated as the Thursday you were last in would only have been a part day, do they count the remainder of that day as one or start from Friday inclusive?
Depending on how you look at it you are doing 2 lots of 24 hours in a 36 hour period...
