At Castle Combe, are there a few decent places to take pics of the track from? And also will I need a bigger lens than 55mm? I'm wondering whether to rent one again, probably the 18-200 I had at PVS.

If anyone could help me out that'd be spectacular Ta.

55mm won't give you enough reach really.

What is the fitment?

18-200 sounds a bit too versatile!

400 prime, a bank loan and some muscles

If its an EF and you have a fairly recent body, 100-400 would be my choice.

70-200 is a lovely, lovely lens but 200mm is still not particularly generous unless you wangle a press-pass.

I've got a Nikon D3000 so DX format, there is the option of renting a 70-300mm which would actually be a couple of quid cheaper than the 18-200 too. The 18-200 was perfect at PVS, bang on for strip shots and with it starting at 18mm I didn't need to change the lens all day.

Basically the options are this: http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/nikon-af-s-dx-18-200mm-f35-56-g-if-ed-vr-51-p.asp (the PVS lens)

Or this: http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/nikon-af-s-70-300mm-f45-56-g-if-ed-vr-173-p.asp

But by the looks of it I'd need to choose fast as there aren't many of the 300's left for that weekend.

When i took photos for CS/WR last April I took my 300mm prime and thought it was spot on. There's loads of good points around the track where the fencing is minimal. I'd say less than 200 would leave you limited tbh. You could still get some good shots with less than this, but only from one or two points really close to the track.

If you're going to hire something might as well go all out and get the same 300 that I took. Shouldn't be more than £30/40 I guess.

I'd be looking at using my 70-300 Tamron - I find my 55mm shite even in the house.

Yeah 55mm is never enough really, but I didn't know how close you can get or anything like that.

Might as well rent the 300mm seeing as it'd save a couple of quid and I'd get to try a different one Plus I'd like to get that 70-300 one day so it'd be good to see what it's like.

My 70-300 Tamron came bundled with me Eos 450D. How much do they retail at normally? Didn't think they were that special.

P.S. I can see this being moved to Snap Day

TBF none of the tamron stuff is that highly rated so it mostly priced accordingly. Not sure on the actual price without googling, but probably not that expensive.

I had better start working out, the 18-200 killed my wrist at PVS and this one is nearly 200g heavier

They're not too bad Deano A small amount of Photoshopping to brighten up the colours a bit and they'd be even better

Hey, I weigh 9 stone and have office boy hands Doing CAD all day doesn't give you much exercise

Nikkor must make their lenses from a solid piece of Granite or something, as it weighs 745g I saw one in a shop the other day and it was massive, much bigger than I thought it would be! That's probably why it weighs so much then

Although...

200mm will be fine for castle combe. You could always buy a 1.4 tc if youre limited but the difference between 200 and 300mm lenses is actually really small.
