Just make sure you do pay it off during the 0% period because if you over run you'll get raped. And don't be tempted to put other things on it! Too easy to get tempted to go shopping with it!!!
I hate credit cards. I have one. But only use it to buy big things like holidays with so I get the extra
protection etc. And it gets paid off in full straight away.

i use mine for everything as i get airmiles with it, started buying things through the business with it too so the airmiles rack up even more, and yes, pay off straight away, i do it at the end of every week

I use mine for everything too. So long as you don't go crazy with them and spend more than you have coming in it's fine. I get 1% cash back on my egg card on all purchases so usually a nice £30/40 back for money I was spending anyway.

had a look at the tesco one, looks perfect
say I want to spend £1000, can I set up a DD to the card for 83.30 a month and have it paid in 12 months and it all be fine
or do I need to pay it over the 13 months?
credit cards seem daunting to me for some reason

you have 12 months from when you are approved - so basically setup a DD to cover a 11 month period to clear before introductory rate clears

I got one with Halifax for the saem reason as you, definately a better option as opposed to paying monthly/taking it out of savings.

It won't have made any difference at all to your credit rating, that's only a problem if you apply for loads.

The best people to get a credit card from is you bank
Find out what deal they do and apply for that, you are much more likely to be accepted if you go to your bank

Think we might do this for the car insurance next month, our mortgage is with Halifax and has been for 7 months, but Ive been with HSBC for about 12 years and already have a student credit card with them, which would be best to go to? I might apply online but would rather not got rejected

One credit search doesn't affect your credit rating, doing shitloads in a very short space of time does.

I've applied for Halifax today. My current 0% ends in 2 months so plan on paying that off with cash and use this other card for purchases. Mainly just food, bills are on DD.
I'll then start paying off the Halifax card.
I'm trying to save money where ever i can. £30 transfer rate and 10% on car insurance etc - all adds up. Once i've sorted out the payment to my management company as well, that's like £100 i've saved. Just a matter of planning.

Do not go and apply the day after. If it's like a loan, it'll probably get shot down straight away as you've already applied for, and been refused, within 30 days. Go and speak to one of the financial advisers, they will guide you in the right direction.
