Need some help to decide which to go for, obviously the 360 is cheaper but i need to know whch is best. i also understand that the 360 has an online membership charge which is harsh!
Can they be used as an entertainment centre i.e. store media that is easily navigated and slick?
Are they both going to be current for the near future?
Do they both play HD movies?
Can they take external storage?
I just want some reviews frompeople who own and use them to the full potential, Pro's Con's etc
Cheers.

Good god, have you been living with your eyes closed?
Yes they can be used as an entertainment center, either by external drive or through the network. You can play DivX etc. Only the PS3 will play HD movies (blu-ray). Both have very similar specs otherwise, with regards to the wifi, storage, etc. Games are pretty much the same on each, so the only real difference is the blu-ray. If you're into paying for movies then maybe go for that.
Oh, and yes you have to pay for xbox live, which is about £25 per year, but it's worth it imo.

I have both (Not slims, but everything else the same!)
I prefer the PS interface and controllers.
Both have very thorough menus for what you are wanting to do, play games, watch movies, store data etc.
PS has a BluRay drive whereas the 360 has a HDD drive which has lost the HD war.
Both have exclusives that the other doesn't.
Both have 250GB HDD.
I'm not sure on the 360 Slim but the full size ones are stupendously noisey!

I know the basics but want info from users!! Are xbox games still obtainable ;-)
Not too bothered about blu ray, is the entertainment software built in or do you add it?

A lot of the classic xbox games i've tried work absolutely fine. Later PS3's can't do that.
I'd say there was no difference between the fan sound on either slim console.
The "entertainment software" is built in too lol

Its annoying, but if you have full surround sound you only hear when theres a quiet moment.
Not ideal, but I'm trying to be impartial!

Plus he's looking at a slim so what you're saying doesn't really matter

As I said above, I don'y know how noisey the slims are
I'd go for what most of your friends have anyway, or if theres a particular game you want. Or if you're flush, both

With an AV receiver can the sound from the console be put through the surround sound? im trying to combine a DVD player, media storage, media centre and games in one. this is the best option i can think of!

Of course, on either. I have my xbox as my only piece of kit to play dvd's, play games and stream downloaded divx movies over the network. Got it all hooked up to my amp with sub etc.

You can do what you're after on either then mate. If you're not assed about blu-ray tho save your pennies imo.

You'll benefit from the PS3, 360 should be used for "serious" games, hence, in my opinion, why they charge for online gaming access - so they can provide the best service.

i see what your saying, i think if they are essentially the same then the 360 lookes better and they are cheaper to buy. the yearly charge is a bit of a tw*t though..

If you just want to play games get the Xbox. If you want to play games and be able to watch blu-rays get the PS3.

xbox is better online (although you have to pay)
xbox has a better line up
ps3 has blue ray
so if you just want gaming get the xbox or if you really want blu ray get a ps3
