...which would be used for commuting about 150 miles per week and socially about 50 miles per week, what would you go for? I'm 27 and I want something 'relatively' new (2002 onwards) which has comforts and a bit of poke. Insurance isn't too much of a worry and as long as it does 25mpg that's ok too. I also don't want to be shelling out to fix it every 2000 miles or have massive servicing bills. I'm thinking either an A3 3.2 (2003/4) or an M sport 330ci (2001/2/3) or even a 330d (probably a saloon).

Thoughts? Oh and no Skoda Fabia's please

Personally, I'd go for an Astra Coupe turbo and pocket the change/spend the rest on the car.

I had exactly the same thoughts and budget - although wanted a bit more economy where I could.

I bought a Skoda Fabia

I don't want a vectra, they are defo good value for money but I'm aiming for something a bit 'nicer' and therefore probably a bit older too! Similar story with an Astra coupe turbo. The thing that appeals about the A3 is the fact it looks similar to the new shape one and shares some stuff with the R32 golf (namely the engine/DSG box etc). But it might be a bit of a dog for that much money and I don't know whether it'd end up costing loads to maintain.

You might be able to get a nice 1 series for that; or just a little more. I had a 120d ES and that really nice to drive, cheap to run and went well! Was an 05 plate with 80 and sold for £6100

That's not a bad shout actually. Would feel a bit less risky than an 02 plate 330ci too, are they quite relaible the 1 series (and not too costly to maintain)?

Not keen on that shape Ibiza John and defo not looking for a FRP

Mondeo ST TDCi/V6, Fiesta ST, I'd be wary of pre 2004 330/320d's because of the stupid inlet blades snapping off and mashing the engine

Hmmmm http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201038368784484/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/6000/model/1_series/make/bmw/postcode/ch442dz/quicksearch/true/radius/100/page/1?logcode=p

Set of decent wheels and possibly a remap and that'd do the job...

Not keen on CTR's, would probably consider an ST220 but would worry me that it'd drop loads in value quickly.

Even the E46 323 had enough poke, my mates is a decent car and cost £2500 with 62,000miles, bargain. Thats a 2.5ltr engine, 170bhp, full leather.

only bad points are its a 4dr
