Afternoon

A colleague at work has ordered a new tax disc over the phone on monday, didn't turn up by yesterday and so the DVLA said they would post one first class for today - didn't arrive.

She has now run out of her 5 days grace by the police for getting a new tax disc etc. What can she do? My only thought was to ring the DVLA up and cancel the discs and ask for a refund and go to the post office and get one?

If bought online you have proof tax has been purchased within an email. Just print that off and drive around. Thats what I do.

Not sure if this was meant to be an excuse for still driving around or not? A picky/jobsworth copper would be more than happy to fine you for it regardless.

Even if it was purchased over the phone it should still show on the DVLA system as being taxed.

Driving with or without tax and actually displaying the tax disk whether you have it or not are two different laws.

it is arguable though because you cant display it if its in the post but then that rules out the no tax penalty, leaving you with the no tax disc offence.

so really it is down to the officer.

can get fined for not displaying it even if its taxed. although would be very harsh if its on its way and a proof email is present. depends how much of a burk the police person wants to be.

I've never displayed a tax disc on my bike & my car I've gone without displaying when I've been waiting for my tax disc to arrive. If you've paid it, then you are taxed.

graham888, hes not talking about taxing the vehicle hes talking about displaying it.

anyone can drive around with no tax disc shown, its just unlucky he was stopped at the time.

As for no proof, have they checked to see if the money has left their account?

Yeah I've been stopped but explained that I'm still waiting, if any copper gave me a ticket for that offence I would argue that all the way.

Which was kinda my point about if you've paid it you are taxed, so they're not going to pull you over to check. Might just ask if they spot it.

I've been pulled countless times on my Ninja. I tell them I don't display it because it's too easy to steal and they completely understand!

You can be given a £30 FPN for not displaying a tax disc.

However if i stop you i would more likely deal with means of a CLE2/6. Which is basically a document that confirms with the DVLA if the vehicle is currently taxed. If it comes back all in order then no fines etc. But if it comes back vehicle is untaxed then obviously you can be dealt with accordingly.

Thanks.
