Generally good cars.
Try and at least get a 6cylinder engine as the punny 8v and 16v engines wont be beneficial fuel wise. They are heavy cars.If insurance is an issue with the 6cyl,try and get a later 318is with the M44 1.9 16v with 140bhp.
Had a 328i sport with 144k on the clock and it ran and drove faultless.Only thing i needed to change was a rear wheel bearing.
Diesels only came in 4 door and possibly estates and iirc they were 325td.
Even the estates can look nice.
Try and get something with the Mtec kit though as the other bumpers etc look shite.Alpina stuff looks ok on some colours.
Remember they are getting on a bit so have a good look over it,bushes etc.

IMO get something with low miles -80k or something with high miles 120k+ as I got mine at 103k and have spent a shit load on replacing things, the high mileagers would have lots replaced hopefully.
As for the overheating, its just because of low water from idiots that don't check it, stuck thermostat or fucked viscous fan, if you get a 320/323/328 they are fully aluminium engines so don't like overheating as much as iron engines.

Mine actually fucked up because of a bad repair so was difficult to find the problem until it was too late. As said though buy one that's had a lot of money spent on the bits like suspension bushes and a new clutch would be nice.

Funny though...when I sold mine I bought my second Scooby. I had to take it back the garage were I got it fixed for something and the guy let me take it. As I was driving the beemer I thought ' WTF did I get rid of this for!'

The quality and refinement compared to the Scooby was laughable

Its because no one replaces the rear trailing arm bushes as it seems a dealer job only as the stupid tool is expensive, unless you go for powerflex which I did.

The bushes only last 60k miles, so pretty much 90% of bmws over that won't handle as well as they could.

You could probably had got 2 of the cars for that

I have a 325 with all the trimmings and have had it for 3 years now and is by far the best car i have ever owned. Wouldnt bother with anything less than a 6 cylinder engine, may aswell get a 325 or 328 (but watch them for overheating).

Buy one and you will love it. They are VERY cheap now so i would wait until you see one with a clean shell.
