.....Rust.

Ive sold my Saxo and on the hunt for a Puma.Prices seem to vary, but most of them have rust on the rear arches. Is it a major problem??Can it be sorted relatively cheaply??Is it worth buying 1 with tatty rear arches for slightly less and then getting some1 to sort out the rust??

Few examples ive seen close to home are...

Y reg, black Puma with 66k and FSH.Lots of receipts, description makes out it has been well looked after.Long tax and MOT.Slight bubbling on the arches.Up for 1150 but said he would take 1k.

S reg,silver,116k,description is vague but its from a trader.Long MOT and tax till end December.Looks clean in the pics.Up for 895 but dont know if traders are up for a bit of haggling.Would try for 800 1st then 850 if he declines.

W reg,silver,103k,again described as good with long tax and MOT.Arches are tatty and can see that in the pics.Up for 750 so probably get it for 700.No history.

Now ive got 1k to spend so what would be the best option??Really after a silver 1 but also like black.Sensible head would say go for the black 1 as it seems the best deal but i would still want to get the arches sorted thus have to spend more money which i dont have this time of year.

If you read this Steve,am i right in thinking you sorted the arches on your Puma??

4/5k

those arches are hard to come by, genuine anyway, then you have the fucking about of sorting the track, rear is easy, front requires more sourcing of hard to get parts

Even the racing puma's weren't built very well, remember reading somewhere that the body kit is fibreglass and cracks appear on the quarter panels!!! Lovely to look at though! Definately get one with history, zetecs need regular servicing and if it uses a drop of oil...they all do!! Especially the 1700cc yamaha engine

the body kit is all metal however its just bodged and welded onto standard puma panels by Tickford, so not great, but not that bad either really

if ones are fibreglass and/or cracking they arent genuine

They will all be going to some degree, the main area for corrosion is inside and if you can see it outside that's because it's made it's way through.

Don't pay too much.

I would be seeing if there were any advisories on the previous MOTs.

Mine needed brake lines, bearings and a few other jobs so if they've come up in the previous test you'll need to do them next time.

All fairly standard stuff for a car of that age/mileage.

Ask about those two and ball joints, track rod ends and CV gaitors. If there are no receipts for any of that then I'd get my haggling shoes on and go in cheeky.

if i was you id check the following places for rust very carefully on inspection

rear beam mounting points, plus surrounding areas up to 6 inches away for rust, surface is ok, if you can stick a screwdriver through it no go.

along the sills, again no go if you can pierce it.

the vin plate inside the vehicle on the drivers side, if you look under the car where the seat mount plate is its there, a lot rust through there.

anywhere 6 inches around the seat belt mount points

I would say of all the small stuff they're fairly nice. Gear change is chunky and clear, feel fairly nice on the turn, not a bad car at all.
