I know a few folk on here have iPads.. I'm halfing in for one with the folks for my christmas and was just wondering..
Is it awkward using it whilst sitting on a couch with it on your lap? Just thinking because it will sit flat on the lap rather than sitting at an angle like a laptop/netbook screen does.

Yup.. Everyone keeps telling me I've no need for one as I've got a wee NC10 netbook..
Doesn't stop me from wanting one though! I've basically spent £365 to play Angry Birds like 4 times bigger..

Seriously awkward and will give you a neck pain after a while.
Absolutely the worst parts about the iPad are the small buffer and the terrible working positions.
These problems taken in to account however it's still the best piece of electronic equipment I've purchased for years. By far!

its not awkward at all, very comfortable. but then I do have a strong wanking right arm.
The next iPad is rumoured to be in production for the first Quarter of next year, no official news of when it'll likely go on sale, but goes without saying 2 cameras and retina screen minimum.
This is of course only useful if all your friends have iphone4's, ipads or macs, otherwise facetime will be useless.
Im sure you wont take your iPAD out to take photos with you
I have an iphone4 and have only used facetime the once with the misses on her mac as a test.
Great feature, but a long time away from being mainstream.
Another benefit, the first gen iPad will likely decrease in price around Feb time in preperation for the new one.

I think the iPad 2 might be announced in feb but I don't think it'll be released till April tbh.. I dont really mind using this one for 4 months or so.
I'm not sure on the retina display speculation.. Surely a display that size with the same pixel density as the iphone 4 would cost a fortune?

Nope, not awkward at all. It's not something I hold up for long periods of time though, usually just lie it on my thighs and look down at it rather than hold it at an angle and look forward if that makes sense.

Bullet proof argument that. Correct me then?
Don't get me wrong, I love my iPad and am using it this very moment. However a labtop DOS offer a better working position and a stationary computer offers an even better one. This is for long time use though, which of course is not what the iPad is intended for.
As for the buffer, this truly comes in to effect while streaming video. The buffer on the iPad is seriously way to small.
But no, you're right. I'm just talking shit... You tool!
As for the 2. gen comming this winter... No!
Apple updates their products yearly, which will mean spring/summer for the iPad.
Regarding the cameras and display, that's purely guess work and delivering such as fact is beyond retarded.

They update their mobile products yearly, for the past few years anyway, although they don't officially say that.

A couple of component suppliers for the current iPad/iPhone have already confirmed they are producing cameras for the next gen iPad and its penciled for a Q1/early Q2 release.
