A sixth form student has been locked up for two years and eight months after he admitted throwing a fire extinguisher from a roof during a riot.

Clearly he is just been made an example. I agree with everyone in saying what he did was completely irresponsible and damn right fucking stupid but 32 months is a ridiculously sentence considering no one was harmed and in comparison, people who have killed or badly injured people have received lesser sentences.

Not really, i have gripes with parts of the uni educational system as well as certain students. But i don't act like a cunt for the sake of it like a lot of people (usually people who have never attended uni) do when dicussing these topics.

Stupid thing to do and the consequences COULD have been serious - but they weren't; He admitted his guilt whether he was coersed by his mother or not. A community punishment would have been a better option - instead of costing the state for a stay in a hotel; make him put something back for 12-18months; street cleaning, homeless shelter volunteer work. Make him learn a few elssons that way not just spend 12months in jail and out he comes.
He's a teenager, we've all done stupid things when we were teens. He was a sixth form student, that's little more than a school kid.

This is a pretty high profile news subject, and to all intents and purposes the PM has said that this guy will have his ass handed to him on a plate - which he just has been.
Anything else he probably would have got a smaller sentence/community work etc.

Clearly you don't know what his situation was whilst he was at sixth form. For all we know he could be a straight A student studying to become a doctor. This just backs up my post i.e.: certain people not having a fucking clue 
Sam - I agree! Community service would be a better fitting punishment for this rather than jail time when you take into consideration that worse crimes get lesser sentences.
Ben - Prisons are far too relaxed, but I think that's a dicussion in itself.
