Just had my MOT done and it failed epically.
Just wanted an explanation of some of the reasons and how much do you think it would all cost to do by the average garage?
001 Front brake pads less than 1.5mm thick (pretty obvious)
002 (both) headlamps insecure (WTF?)
003 Nearside front constant velocity joint gaiter insecurely mounted to it's housing
004 (n/s/f x-member) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded (welding?)
005 Nearside rear wheel bearing rough when rotated (new bearing required)
Advisory Notes
006 o/s/rear tyre perished on inner wall
Some are pretty blatant and cheap fixes. It's the welding bit that's worrying me. But could someone please explane what the hell failure 003 means?
Thanks
Edit: was meant for the help area btw.

We talking below the £100 mark, or will it be several hundred?

Cheers Tom. Doesn't look like a big job at all if it's that..
But I suppose it's all about the labour in the end. I'm still financially crippled from Christmas, great time for an MOT to come!

He did mention something about underneath the headlamps that have gone. Bodge job or just get hold of some new headlamps? Or is it nothing to do with the headlamps at all? lol

I remember both of my headlights were insecure in this way and I passed anyway lol
But you could try and get some new clips or just try wedging something underneath them? May have to get your headlight allignment done afterwards, but if its a retest they probably wouldnt chech it anyway.

the light clips are about 30p from vaux ste. cv joints are about £20 roughley. a gm bearing can be about £30 in the kit so not too much

002 (both) headlamps insecure - Bolts and/or brackets missing
003 Nearside front constant velocity joint gaiter insecurely mounted to it's housing - depends whether they're talking about the hub side or the gearbox side. Could be that the snap ring(?) on the gearbox has fucked up and it's got too much movement in, could be that the hub nut's loose or that it's the wrong CV altogether. Could be as easy as the split pin on the outside not being there even. Best to ask.
004 (n/s/f x-member) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded - Is the vehicle in question a corsa? If so, as said, welding required. Probably looking at least £150-300.
005 Nearside rear wheel bearing rough when rotated - as said, new bearing required. If it's that bad that it's rough when rotated that sounds like there's no grease in there, I wouldn't be driving it about unless you need to.
Advisory Notes
006 o/s/rear tyre perished on inner wall - I thought this would be a fail tbh.

I suggest you give them both a good, firm yet possitive and supportive talk to.. Maybe tell them they are superb at their job and they brighten up the lives of others.

or just get a 2nd opinion. take it somewhere else , dont mention your initial MOT, and see what they come out with. Its worth it for the sake of £30 - £40.
the first MOT guy might be taking you for a ride

All seem like easy fixes apart from welding because I presume you will have to take it to get done. CV clips wont take 2 mins aslong as the boot is OK. Headlight clips are easy and cost next to nothing and pads and a bearing shouldnt come to more than £25 from a motor factors.

Somewhere that does decent MOT's, perhaps? None of those are particularly picky faults.
The headlights are loose and will cost all of £1 and 30 mins to fix
The CV gaitor is loose and needs securing, otherwise the driver may find it loses all grease and locks up on him - not going to be fun, is it?
The brake pads are too low - this is something I'd expect someone who looks after their car to notice anyway tbh.
If the rear wheel bearing is actually that rough, then again, it needs looking at. It's about £8 from Autovaux and around 30 mins - 1 hours work to sort DIY.
Where in that list did you think the tester was being harsh? It's totally impossible to say with those faults without seeing the car anyway.
