Just quickly, If it fails emissions does that mean its logged as an XE, therefore not insured as one?

No, if your read an MOT certificate its only the chassis number printed on, it's upto the tester really.
Mine was registered as a 1.6, insured for having the XE and sailed its MOT.
I did attempt to register it but DVLA asked for an engineers report, by that time i had to sell the car.

Having it logged as a XE etc wouldn't matter, The limit is the same for all cars of the age.

did not know this, i thought it would be dependant on engine size. So a 2001 Lambo would have to have the same emissions test as my 1.2 corsa?

The emissions are actually based on the age of the ENGINE not the car, so if you had a 2011 corsa and put an old <1993 redtop in it with no CAT it would pass the emissions.

depens if you have a 20xe fitted or a c20xe fitted cause the emissions are tested on the engine

This is confusing..Could you explain a little clearer? I understood that the car emmisions were tested depending on the engine. If you change the engine you have to prove the year of the engine other wise they will test as what is registered for the car. So my cars a 1.6, im going to put a 2.0 in but cant proove it so they will test as a 1.6....
Bottom line is...Will it fail?

Aye you need proof of what year the block is from, just get the engine block number and it will be easy enough to get the year from it.

Yes to supercars having the same test, I believe it may be different for post 2001 cars though.
Engine age does come into it, But thats how people get around not having a cat, If your car has a cat, and say its a C20xe, It has the same emissions test as a X16XE corsa etc.
For the "Its a old engine, No need for cat test" You just need to prove the engine age, Which is simple on a XE as there is a date stamp on the Cam cap under the oil cap.

So what year must the engine be to not need a cat?
What do I need to do for a 20xe in a corsa 1999?
