Had a 2.0 esp for a while now, bout it as a runabout and kept it 
Think Ive converted to ford for a bit now.
Fancy something with a bit more poke and better interior though
Anyone had any experience with these?
what are they like on fuel etc?

good handling nice cars, not massivly fast but nippy enough.
I like them, think the main prob is rusty arches

We've got a rare lucury pack one with Raven leather, luxury electric heated seats and sub. Deffo nicer than the average ST170 as Ford plastics are a llittle iffy. Lovely 6 speed Getrag box.
Great car to drive litterally handles like it is on rails and not as slow as people make them out to be. They dont feel particularly quick due to the long gearing.
The only thing that rusts on these are the wheels nothing too drastic to worry about and servicing is dirt cheap. These also have a timing chain so no belts to worry about.

Yeah they are proper pants from time to time the seal between the rim and tyre breaks down due to the rust and the tyre deflates slowly. The last time it happend we had all the rust ground off the rim and treated it with a rust inhibitor. Been fine since.

Agree with everything you've said apart from they are a belt not a chain. It gets replaced at 100k. Easy enough belt to do though, did mine in a couple of hours without any hassles.

Hmm sounds good.
Not a lot of them have the full leather, the seats look a lot nicer.
I take it all of them with full leather have the heated seats too?
And I'm assuming they all come with heated windscreen because the one I have at the moment has it.

heated windscreen is an option on most ford cars, and standard on top spec ones usually, so the st170 may have it.
lovely cars. my cousin has a 5 door with front recaro leather seats which are a nice touch.
not much to go wrong, parts are cheap as chips as they're so common.
6 gears are handy and keep the petrol consumption down.

Full leather and heated/electric Recaros are ubber rare. Majority of them have half leather.

My mate had one about two months, bought from a ford dealership and thats where it spent most of its time! Owned two months drove it about 5 times. Went back and forward to Ford so many time with problems. eventually they just gave him his money back as they spent over £2k trying to fix it.
Had a new inlet manifold, new VVT box or something, 2x new Cats complete with lambda sensors etc...
I certainly wouldnt touch one after all that trouble, would definetly not buy one without a warranty.

Well we've owned one for 8 Years now and all it costs in a service once a year and tyres occasionally. Not much goes wrong with them as the engines are very basic. (Zetec bottom end with VVT head)

Well I was told about reliability horror stories when I bout the esp, and it's been brilliant,
The one I'm looking at has 74k, full leather, black 3 door.
Has to be black imo

to be fair you get 'bad cars' with any make and model, its just my friends experience has definitely put me off them!
You hear horror stories about Clio 172s but mines never missed a beat!

Yup did 70k in 182 and the only expensive part was the regular servicing and tyres.

My mates st170 has needed a rear spring for mot past 2 years (diff sides) not sure if its a common fault? Wasnt as simple as dropping the beam either to replace I dont think

My dad's had over £1k's worth of stuff done on warranty (54 plate car 2 years ago), similar stuff to ash_corsa's post, whole load of sensors, CATs etc
