Me and a couple friends are looking to move out in 6-12 months and getting a house together. We have been over it and everybody seems keen, we all earn enough and one of the lads already rents so shouldn't be a problem getting a house.
What are the complulsary outgoings of renting a house?
Rent
Council tax
Utility bills
TV license
Contents insurance?
We have seen a house which looks good (link) but we're not sure roughly how much gas, electric and water bills would be?? Is there any way of estimating without going through the agency and asking?
So far we have worked out
Rent £925 pcm
Tax £200 pcm
Bills ??
TV license £12 pcm
Insurance ??

i think these are all my direct debits (2 bed semi).
Mortgage----------------------------- £943.00
Council Tax-------------------------- £138.00
Mobile Phone Contract x2------------- £65.50
Sky (T.V, Broadband, Phone)---------- £63.58
Gas---------------------------------- £42.00
T.V License-------------------------- £12.50
Home Insurance----------------------- £27.91
Electric----------------------------- £36.00
Water-------------------------------- £21.00
Life Insurance----------------------- £20.77
then you have food, travel costs and petrol and maintenance charges if you live in an apartment.
thats on a 2 bed house though and we both work full time so heating/electric appliances are only on for about 6 hours a day during in the week.

We pay...
Mortgage - £710
C. Tax - £98
Gas & Electric - £127
Water - £36
Insurance - £32
TV Licence - £12
They are our compulsarys. I budget £300 for food, £150 for petrol and £150 for misc spending!
For telephones, broadband TV etc you can pay what you want!

we've just got a mortgage and it's less than £400 a month.
Not a chance we could afford to pay £700 or £900

That's cos you live oop north 
My mortgage in north Lincs is £500 a month 
Jakey - newish property with decent ratings, I would say budget £50 a month for each utility but make sure you get on uSwitch and get on the cheapest DD tariff straight away otherwise you are throwing good money away

What Danny said, £40 a month does me on my own for gas/electric, won't be much more expensive.
Insurance is cheap if you shop around. Think I pay £6 a month for £30k contents, buildings is rolled into my service charge.
Phone/Broadband I pay £25, TV is on freesat so no charge. Add another tenner if you want sky/virgin.

Right, found out a little of a lady who lives in a 4 bed on the same estate.
Rent: £925
Tax: £200
Gas and Electric: £120
Water: £220 (6months)
TV license: £12.50
Is what they pay. Which is £325 each a month, which is very tempting

50 a month food? i probably do that a week on myself 
i just spend £115 on a shopping trip at the weekend for food and the usual bog roll and stuff. usually lasts a week and a bit.

I buy and cook my own food at home even though i pay rent and i've never spent more than £50 on food in a month.

Big bag of pasta, thats several meals. Jacket potatos cost £1 for 4, theres 4 meals. It is pretty easy to eat for cheap imo.

Dont you get bored though? 3 chicken breasts these days is £5 on their own, kind of a staple for meal times, let alone beef/steak...pork is a bit cheaper but can be fatty [/housewife]
If you reckon you can stomach living together as mates go for it, I cant say I would encourage it though through my own personal experiences, only ever live with family or spouse/kids, never mates

I looked into the renting with a group of people but decided would be better to put the money towards a mortgage instead of paying off someone elses.
Pad looks nice though  Would be an extra £600 a month for something nice like that down here

You'll spend about £30 a week on groceries. Don't forget you need to keep your clothes clean, your place clean and you won't get very far on a bag of pasta and four potatoes.
My breakdown is roughly:
Rent - £550
Electricity - £38
Water - £10 (rough guess, I was paying in £20 a month but my account was massively in credit after a while of doing that)
TV Licence - £30 per quarter
Sky (TV, Broadband and Phone) - £25
BT Line - £10
Groceries - £150
Other non house stuff are:
Mobile - £35
Gym - £10
Be realistic with what you're going to spend. There's nothing worse than being over stretched or in debt.
