Isn't worst case that all the pistons could now be bent and damage to the cylinder head.
That will cost a fair bit to get fixed if that is the case.
What speed were you doing when it went? Generally the faster your going the more damage it will cause.

just get a new/second hand engine. put a 1ltr micra 16v twin cam engine in it. you'll leave the 2.0 turbo corsa conversions for shit!

im happy with my 8v engine, just finished rebuilding it myself & its always cheap to get parts. plus alot of the 8valvers you can just get parts out of novas to fit, so cheaper still!!

1.4 16v Sport.
Timing belt snapped at 36k
twisted all the valves (16).
I'd only had the car for 2k so was still under warranty from the dealer.
Corst them 800-1000 big ones.
I was doing 20-25mph when it happened and tried turnin the car over.
If its that bad just get another engine. Whether it be bigger capacity or just the same.

exactly the same for me PeteMTBar, all valves bent and pistons scored doing 30mph in 4th. Was recomoneded to get new engine which cost about £1500 fitted. is a 1.4 16v too

If you weren't driving fast you will probably only have bent valves (they cost about £12-£15 each from Vauxhall, or £4 each from a Motor Factors), you'll need to check the cylinder head and pistons for damage too.

Some one wanna clear up what the timing belt is for....why would it snap...and anything you can do to prevent this occuring as looking above there a few fairly newish motors which have snapped the belts...I take it its more common in older cars?

Timing belt is there to basically ensure that your engine has correct timing!
As Niven says they should be changed every 36k miles, apart from a worn belt, other things could cause it to snap, such as a roller that has shattered, water pump seizing, road debris getting caught on the belt/pulleys, anything like that really!
