Looking for peoples views on Halfords spray paints.

Have you used them and how did you find the colour match??

Specifically Star Silver II but other colours will do for comparing sakes.

My dad tried to wet sand a scratch out on his old car but sanded to far and went down to the primer , was metallic red, he went to halfords and got the colour mixed, looked fine, even when he sold it the buyer didn't notice it.

Don't know about star silver though

go to thornton autopaints and they will give you a pretty much perfect match and then they will put it in an aerosol for you. they spray so much better than halfords tins aswell.

Yeah think i will nip along. They open on a Saturday??

Ive had Star Silver III made up by them before and it was a good match.Halfords is about half the price so thought i would give it a try.But after a quick look on google,it seems to be hit or a miss.

Cheers for the other comments folks.

I always went to the local paint shop to get mine.
£13 for a large can of mixed Star Silver and it always matched.

They're fine, are you asking the quality of the paint or the colour match? both IMO are fine theres no difference in the paint colour (not in the arden blue anyway), and if the outcome of the paint quality isnt very good, then your obviously doing it wrong

Depending what your spraying and how good your prep is, you can achieve pretty impressive results.

Aye just off the phone to Fife Auto Paints.

11.50 for a 400ml spray tin.Said to take the car along as there is a few shades of Star Silver II.
Thought it was more than that,so actually not that much more expensive than Halfords.

Oh and its for colour coding the door handles and side strips.Don't want a dodgy colour match.
High Build primer will take car of the textured-ness.

I did the grille and plug cover on mine not that long ago. Just rubbed the plastics down with very fine paper, primed it with a bit of U-Pol twice then painted, rubbed, painted, rubbed a bit then laquer. That was using Halfords spray paint and laquer, came out much better than I'd expected. Still haven't polished them up and they're still looking bright tbh.

What grade of sandpaper did you use to rub it down in between painting Alan??

I know this is the proper way to do it,but ive always just gave them a quick rub with a scotch pad, panel wiped, couple of coats of primer,2 coats of paint then a few coats of laquer.
Never really needed rubbed down in between as ive always been happy with the finish, but thats probably just me being impatient.

Should be about 2000 grit sanding down the paint then laquer, The first time I shit myself when the paint goes matt, but the laquer magics it shiny again.

I'm not really sure if you HAVE to rub the paint down before the laquer, the laquer should be rubbed down and polished if you want a glass finish.

Right i work there so basicly if ur spraying metal use the cilecose based paint thays mixed up 4 you this also works well on plastic but the paint on the racking or on the shelfs works best on plastic but not so good on metal its because its only water based so is a lot thiner when it comes to the primer pritty good but must agree with a previous statment the lacquer its shocking agen the mixed up stuff is a lot betta. It comes out alot better as with any paint if its realy well prepered first hope that helped just carnt do anythink about the high price thow lol all work iv done to my car haz turned out realy well.

I'm not sure but it was very very fine, only enough to matt the paint rather than scratch it. I had no idea what I was doing and ended up just doing what I thought was right, wasn't sure if the paint alone was enough of a key for the next coat.
