Well I am training as a surveyor but have branched out into certain aspects of project management. I ideally would like to end up doing project management.

My course is 5 years, one day a week. You can get into it other ways, generally through experience but knowledge of the trade is key.

Also general good management skills such as Excellent organisation and time keeping are essential!

I am an IT (infrastructure) Project Manager with just over 3 years experience and have just joined Hewlett Packard as a PM. Qualification wise I am a Prince 2 Practioner which is a structured Project Management Method based on Best Practice. Many roles (certainly in IT) require this as a minimum now and it is used in approximately 90 Countries IIRC.

In my experience one does not just walk into Mordor when it comes to Project Management. I would reccomend that you look at PMO (Project Management Office) Support and Admin Roles. Do you have any transferable skills from previous roles? You need to be good at reporting, managing budgets, your resources (man power) and Stakeholders (customers). Depending on the role you do not need to be a subject specialist in the technology or product you are delivering although it does make life easier.

Before I joined HP I was working on a Data Centre refit and developped a good working relationship for the Site Supervisor of the Construction Firm we were using. He told me that within his organisation that most of their PM`s came up through the ranks and effectively were trained to become Site Supervisors/Foreman and later further training to become a PM (This was over a Period of 5 years). Although imho a Construction Site Project Manager is more hands on (managing his workforce) rather then reporting and managing Customers etc.

Qualification Wise a good place to start is the Prince 2 Foundation Course which is usually 2 days followed by a multiple choice questionaire exam. This would give you a good introduction to Prince 2 Methodology.

Another Course worth looking up is PMP.

Bear in mind though that I have landed my last 3 roles on skills and experience and none of them even asked for my Prince 2 Practioners Certificate even though it was listed as a pre-req on the job specs.

Thus I guess my point being is that you need to find a role that will allow you to move into it rather then spend ££££`s on training and expect to walk into a PM role.

hope that helps.

I done a HND in construction management after leaving school.
Got a job as a trainee architectural technician and my work put my through my HNC in architectural technology.

imo i would look for a trainee in some sort of management because the more experience you have the better. You never seem to remember everything youre taught at college/uni, its always from doing the job.

Amazing how everybody strives to call themselves a Project manager these days....

In construction there are two very distinct project manager roles.

One used to call themselves a Site agent/manager, until the title PM became attractive on the telly.

The other used to call themselves a PQS, then they invented the PM role so they could get more heavily involved in the control of contracts to deliver schemes ontime/budget.

Apparently according to NEC3 im a PM aswell

Too many people just organise meetings and chase people when required and call themselves PMs.

Depends on the size of the contract tbh.

A recent city centre development here had 12 separate architects working on it.

I can see a role for a PM there ^^^

A lot of people band about Prince 2 as well.

I like how you can go on the APMG (iirc) website and check to see if someone is a Prince 2 Practioner or not, priceless if they claim to be and are not.

*Disclaimer* not saying you need it to be a PM but IMHO its a sound methodology and worth having.

It really depends on the value, and the percentage cost of the PM

I recently overheard a meeting where one person (talking about a £50k extension) told another a PM was essential and to get one on board ASAP

Most still do call themselves site agents/managers, it's mostly people with little or no site experience that like to dress themselves up with a different title. This is especially the case on very large jobs where there are no end of managers. It's pretty easy to spot them, they have the cleanest boots and viz jackets/coat.

To answer the original question, I'd say 90% of the agent's I've met, the people who actually oversee the site on a day to day basis, have come straight from a trade themselves and been promoted to site agent. Most will have no formal training as such but will have to go on plenty of courses for health and safety, first aid etc. If you have no trade background there are college courses in construction management.
