quote: Professor Brian Cox, a particle physicist at Manchester University and presenter of the BBC's Wonders of the Universe, urged caution over the results.
Writing on the social networking site Twitter, he said: "The Higgs rumours are from an internal, unchecked ATLAS document. Very bad science to leak it. Many mistakes are made in un-reviewed papers."
so possibly untrue..?
Anyway when the hadron collider does start finding these new matters and particles, it will be an amazing step in science, understanding particles and the universe for us

LOL at Brian Cox telling people to take things with a pinch of salt, he's the worst offender

It's about time the LHC did something, remember when it was meant to be making a black hole that would destroy everything?
It's been broken/not running at full capacity for years now, so at least it's done something for once whether this is true or not

All the partical physics bollocks is one reason I dropped Physics at AS Level, we had to do a whole term of learning about theory's, sorry if I wanted to learn about theorys I would of picked something like psychology or sociology

It is a 6 billion dollar machine, it's not gonna be a quick fix after the last cock up, but hopefully we'll see something decent come of it soon *fingers crossed*
And let's hope Hawking's theory of the black holes evaporating is true, lol..

HERE, HERE!
I dropped A-Level physics because most of it was theory based on theory.. If I wanted to study un-substantiated twoddle I'd become a vicar.

Any decent course starts with theory, no matter how boring it is.
You couldn't build a machine like the LHC without some theory behind it.

im waiting for the day they go.....well we collided a particle and made a black whole which we are being sucked into and crushed.
or
we collided particles and made a tyranasrus

trouble is if noone studies it, everything will remain theory

A bit like your theory test. You study and pass but its still called our theory test afterwards.

This.
People must TEST the theories but some of the theories are impossible to test (hence projects like the LHC).
Sadly more theories are disproved than proved, but its when some of the pretty deep theories get disproved it causes problems, just about everything we know about the universe is based on very tender theories and our rather crude understanding of gravity and mass which is why Brian Cox is a rambling idiot.

tbf he's got a point, does annoy me that it's all stated as fact when it's really 'what we believe at this moment in time'

He's a Atheiotic-Fundamentalist any man who can stand there and dismiss all evidence of higher beings, shun religion and then quote ridiculous statements like "We can predict when the universe will end" is an ignorant lunatic.

Disproving the theories is good surely, and the whole point of Science, you can't get it right first time every time, especially when pushing the boundaries as far as we now can.
Brian Cox isn't that bad, Why does E=mc2 wasn't a bad read.
Shunning religion is extremely easy when you have an ability to think for yourself.
