i dont go arse to grarse because i dont have the flexibility in my hips. most guys i see go all the way down end up rolling their lower back shit loads. paralell for me

I do them but the gym I go to now only has a smith machine. Now football season has ended i'm going to try and do legs twice a week.

Do you use padding? I find it alot better without as I can get it in the right position but don't tend to see anyone else not use it?

Never used padding. I sometimes get grazes on my back/neck from the grooves on the bar but its not uncomfortable.

3 or 5 reps is probably "standard".
