Okey want to spend between, 4.5k and 6k.

Here is my list on what im looking for...

  • Petrol
  • 200bhp+
  • Not FWD
  • Less than 10 years old
  • 90k miles max
  • Not a BMW

Been looking at a 2002 Audi S3 (1.8t 225bhp) or a similarly aged VW R32 (3.2 v6 234bhp)

Any other ideas?

Its not "proper" Aparently. Having never driven one myself i cant comment. Internet will tell you the S3 is uninvolving to drive also.

A common misconcepetion, mainly because the "proper" Quattro's had a Torsen diff whereas this uses an electronic Haldex coupling. Most of the time it operates a front wheel bias, only bringing the rears in when the fronts start to lose grip. In real world conditions this is a very good set up.

I do agree about the drive to an extent, it's not as eager or nimble as some other (usually smaller) hot hatches but grip is excellent, especially in poor weather. Mine has even proven to be pretty useful in the snow, I was messing about on some very exposed country roads during the last big snowfall and only got into trouble when the snow was getting higher than the bumper, this was with regular tyres too.

Main things to check are the usual used car stuff. I wouldn't pay too much attention to dealer service books, Audi only do the bare minimum servicing, especially with stuff like cambelts where they don't replace tensioners or water pumps. Also worth checking that the Haldex has had it's oil/filter done.

I've had mine 5 years now and still see no reason to replace it. It's a bit hefty on fuel now that the Mrs uses it for work, she's a carer so lot's of short trips/town driving but still drives well, no rattles or creaks, interior is spot on, Recaros are great etc etc.

I know mine isn't an S3, but I really do rate the quattro and after a remap (when it's working) mine is more than nippy, so a remapped S3 must be pretty ace. I'm not really sure what people are comparing to half the time.
