Hi folks,
Later this year / next year I am thinking of getting rid of the ep3... but everytime I look at "sensible" cars (like golf tdi, astra tdi etc) I just can't commit to doing it and think how much I'll miss having something with a bit of umph!
What are you're thoughts? And for those of you who have done it what did you get and what did you have previously?

not as much money involved but my mate downgraded from mk 4 golf gti to a 106 diesel, once the £1500 hes got left over is spent i can see him regretting it when hes got a shitter car and is not really much better off. probably spending half as much on fuel but thats only £20 a week instead of £40. id rather have the good car and spend the bit extra on fuel tbh

I got a discovery as a sensible option/runabout to a nissan pulsar gtir, and it just ended up me blowing money on the discovery and turning it into an off roader.
Cant keep sensible cars sensible for long personally but you may have more will power.

went from me xe corsa to a s1 elise for 3 months then major downgrade to my mk1 clio 1.2 8v (first car i kept) for 2 years to save for things etc and it worked the savings i made were great and now looking at gettin my own place so if u can live with a underpowered car its a great idea

Ive just sold my megane F1 and bought a 1.2 corsa c!
225bhp to 75 and no torque is abit of a bummer. It was abit of a 'im fed up of spending loads of fuel for the gouverment in tax...im fed up of paying £250 a year to tax it bla bla' so up for sale it went.
Now im like erm i miss it and had no real reason to sell it

What i have to tell my self is to just drive normal and never break the speed limit and just take your time. It doesnt feel slow then as it gets up to 30 through the gears ok shifting at 3k
Its when you floor it through the gears, i just think its embarrasing so i just take me time whilst still being abit 'nippy'. Just dons 150 miles to £20 without trying for mpg. Works out about 40 mpg without seeing a motorway.
That is about the only good thing.

I think I'd be saving at least £150 a month if I sold it (depending on what I got next)... and it's got to that point where me and gf are gonna be looking at a flats/houses early next year or later this year!

i had a mk3 ibiza cupra, bought an ep3 sold tht and bought a mk2 golf diesel, sold that and bought a golf gti so that for another cupra which I sold for the xe. I tried having an under powerd car but when your mates have a focus rs and golf r32s there isnt much point

Always consider it but I'd miss it too much, it's what I'm into and my mates too, if I didn't have a car with 'oomph' or to tinker about on I'd get bored as hell. Still doesn't mean it's not annoying when expensive things break or I see a mod I must have that could easily pay the mortgage that month. Live once I say, if I didn't do it now I'd only regret it later in life

Iv had the ibiza 3 years now. Kept looking at a petrol equivalent but I was determined not to pay stupid ££ on insurance and nothing could match the FR TDi plus there was everything else in the area, bar mine 
Not once have I struggled for a bit of oomph with my car, when iv looked at others uv just stuck with the ibiza. Mates are fitting intercoolers, clutches etc. I can do the same and have done. Only thing I miss is revs but at the end of the day id rather have a smart house than a car I can thrash everywhere with a loud exhaust. Plus I like a night out on the booze too much Dont get me wrong, iv looked at plenty diff cars and had threads but when I see what I can put away a month in savings and still have a nippy car (plus for all the miles I do nowadays) and compare my spending to my mates with focus st's , vxr's struggling to cope with houses etc I appreciate the derv. It can be se sible but with stage 1 map, clutch and fmic it can be a handfull and more to come
Plus has a type r really got oomph

I sold my focus st and bought a puma. Saved myself 430 a month just on finance and about 25 a week in fuel.
It was hard to adjust at first going from a brand new car to a 10 year old one but needs must.
Still wish i had one everytime i see one on the road but then i remember how much i saved and am not too bothered.
Plenty of time to get old and spend my savings on cars yet.

I sold my astra gsi turbo and bought a V reg 2.0 focus
It does what I need it to do, and I hardly use a car nowadays.

i sold a 200sx mk3 astra gsi c20let and a cav 4x4 turbo and iv got an xe corsa now so much better on fuel and still fun

Depends how much you save, see this I could stomach a downgrade, 150 a month not a chance.

You'll get bored, have the best of both worlds if you can!
Diesel and a quick car, although i'm paying for a 2.2 cdti and a CTR, i do about 1000 miles a month and get double the MPG from the accord, so that pretty much means the accord pays for it's self in terms of it's saving over the Civic.
It also means you have a nice comfy car and you can have one to go crazy with!

I downgraded from a Clio 182 and Cooper S to a Clio 1.2 in order to pay some debts off.
I was ALWAYS skint before and though on paper the savings didn't seem that much i've managed to pay off much more than I thought I would resulting in about 80% of my wages now being disposable income rather than 30%.
Best thing I ever did, been just over 12 months now, you get used to not driving like an idiot everywhere and most of the time you can't go fast anyway with too many cars on the road etc.
Now I'm where I want to be im looking at either a 120d or 123d BMW when I get back off holiday(a car I would not have been able to save for/afford before) but will miss the Clio and 'Cheap' motoring.
In my case it was a step back to go forwards and the 12 months has flown.
