Used to have igriff@hotmail.com but signed up with blag details so it can't be retrieved.

Not quite that good, I think it had to be at least 5 characters, maybe 6, I got it fairly soon after gmail was launched though.

I signed up to gmail when it was still in beta stages. Tried to get alex@gmail.com as above, but wouldnt let me. So went with my full name.

In relation to the OP... I use my own domain, but also a gmail for personal stuff.

I only use it for replies to for sale ads, when buying stuff off the net and job applications etc. Basic stuff really.

It was in beta until about a year ago
