anyone know the legalities of this?

There a fire hydrant in a field next door to us, this is obviously there for events of a fire and the fire brigade need a top up.

However the blokes field it is owns two fishing ponds, and he keeps tapping a hose on the end of the hydrant to top them up.

Apart from its not metered, whats the legalities? its a pain in the arse because it means our water pressure drops when hes doing it and he often leaves it on over night, the other night we had a fire down the road and it got me thinking that if the fire brigade needed to top up it would cause issues if hes got his hose attached to it, possibly dangerous?

Thing is my old dear made an anonymous request to the fire people to ask if it was illegal, the women said she wasnt sure and that shed contact severn trent to ask and let us know.

Anyway she rings back and says pretty much "oh yes, the water people do sometimes let people tap into the hydrants as if you try to stop it it causes more agro then its worth"

that dont sound right to me

Here's a different story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11022975

Says certain people are permitted to use hydrant water, but otherwise it's illegal?

also the blokes a bit of a cunt recenetly he accused us that our Klargester was leaking into his field which was turning his pond water cloudy and affecting his fishing business.

We forked out 250 quid to have water samples tested which all came back clear and he still tries to say it was that that caused it, so we had to have the field dug up and pipes relaid

fucking shit twat

In reality you can't really do much about it, all the car wash guys that pop up at supermarkets do it.

A person commits an offence if they damage or obstruct a fire hydrant, and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of up to £500 (Fire & Rescue Services Act 2004 42 (6-8).

It is illegal to use a fire hydrant to obtain water for purpose other than fire fighting, unless authorised by the Water Authority.

Persons found to be using fire hydrants without the appropriate authorisation are liable to prosecution.

No need I've found a picture of you: http://i37.tinypic.com/2uxu06u.jpg

Next time, when he leaves it over night, go in there and switch the hydrant off and cut his hose.

Moving on...

Why would there be a fire hydrant in someones private land?
Surely fireman sam would been access at all times to use and maintain/test it. Phone your local fire dept. They will probably have some sort of hydrant location plan.
Or its maybe owned by the land owner for his ponds.

You could connect a hose of your own down to his pond then call them about it.

I work for a water company. Its illegal unless he has the permission of the local water board, and the local fire department.

More likely get something done by the fire department than the water board tbh. I'd try calling a local station or something.
