I bought myself an LED torch tonight so I went out to play. This is my first attempt at proper light painting and I've still got a long way to go, but I didn't think it was too bad.
I think I'm going to have fun with this

I just made myself a small softbox for my torch and I had another go with the cars in the garage as its the only place dark enough at the moment.

Its so much easier with a softbox.

I realise there is a little too much unlit area on the Porshce, but I rushed that one.

What camera are you using? Your photos always seem to have really soft focus?

I like this effect though, I think I'll give it a go one day

Using a 450D. The focus is spot on, but sometimes I do go overboard with the noise reduction which softens the image.

I had reduce a lot of noise on the first one as I shot it @800 by accident.

That's class! How do you do this? What do you do with the torch, just shine it at the car whilst taking a picture?

Yeah, set the shutter speed at anywhere between 10 and 30 seconds and try and get a nice smooth coverage with the light.

Here's one a did last night...

Excuse the quality, its taken straight off facebook.

This may sound dumb. But how do you not have a blur of 'yourself' in the picture where the trail is?

Long shutter sped on the camera, run around with the torch pointing in the general direction of the camera whilst "drawing" things in the air with said torch

Something I'd like to have a go at but never gotten round to doing

Yeah, i've seen a lot of his work. Its really good.

Here's my range of home made modeling lamps/soft-boxes too.

The small one:

Here's the bigger one which is roughly twice the surface area.

The hole in the back is where I put the torch head in and there's a flap at the top where I can get my hand inside to put the diffuser on once the torch is inside.

last one is the best apart from i dont like the 2 lines in it.

would also be better in some of the others if the b/g wasnt so dark .

ps you also need to borrow your dads car to do it lol no offence the passat doesnt make for an attractive subject lol.

I did have a go at this but realised i need a much brighter torch.
