How daunting isit when ur 40 miles away from home on the hard shoulder with no breakdown cover, no money and no idea what to do.
that was my case last night, i've been driving 6 years and never had a breakdown i put a redtop in mi car and within 2 weeks the bastard thing lands me in the shit..
Eventually i made it home at 4am and stung for £140 off the RAC. Has any1 else a story to tell on this

nova broke down once, was a driveshaft, got towed back to work by a work mate then called rac who towed it home.
Nova broke down again, the clutch cable snapped, rac came and fixed it by the roadside for £12
always managed to limp home in the corsa
corrado left me strand once, burst water hose, called rac and they towed me home.

I broke down last week for the first time also. The roll pin fell out of my gear selector on the gear box (106 GTi) 20 miles from home at 11pm
Lost all gears, armed with only a flat blade screw driver and a phillips screwdriver, i took off the air intake, found a wood screw in my mates car, bent it on the kurb, and slotted it through, got 3rd and 4th gear only, and limped it home like that 
Next day at work, order the roll pin from Peugeot, £0.32+ VAT, then after discount it was £0.29 inc VAT.  And they delivered it 7 miles to my work
Hammered it in the selector, and its good as new.
Although i do have RAC cover aswell.

my engine mount snapped the otherday. engine hit the deck about 1.5/2 miles down the roads from my house. got a new mount, a big bad full of tools, jack etc.... carried it down and fixed it at the roadside. worked out cheaper than breakdown cover although i was lucky lol

run out of petrol in my old mk2 golf at night on a b road with no streetlights, no phone and no money. fortunately i pulled over on a layby and had to try and flag people down but everyone chipped past

i snapped a driveshaft in basingstoke without breakdown cover, lucky for me a nice person lent me theres, after that i got breakdown cover and ive used it many of times when the 4x4s breakdown offroading

Makincorsac, i broke down 35 miles from home on a motorway / hard shoulder. I ran out of petrol. Had no money, no cover.
Had to use the emergency phone to let the police know. Told them my situation and how my mate was coming through to give me petrol.
Next thing i know some recovery truck comes along which the police had arranged. Cost me £172 the next day because i didnt have that money on me in cash.
Had to take the train the following day with an old school bag which had a jerry can full of petrol in it

ive run out of petrol twice and rang my dad both times who came to the rescue, only been a mile or 2 away from home though
once had my eml and power light come on just has i set off home from skegness, made it home and sorted it the next day, was a dodgy alternator

Broken down once, luckily for me it was as i pulled into the pub car park to meet some mates, so decided as i couldnt drive home i mite aswel get pissed
Garage picked it up the next morning, turned out to be the EGR valve. £300

Driveshaft came out on the corsa and a mate had to give me a tow back a month or two ago. luckily wasn't too far from home.
i did quite enjoy it though

Remember once my dad taking a trip to south of france in the TVR drove all through france for a few days, made it back into england stoped at a pub to have a meal the the clutch decieds to give way as he was pulling out.
i drove an hour to pick him up and his car got recovered the next day.
plus a 4 figure bill for a new clutch.

My only breakdown where I had to get recovered was when the fuel pump went on the Transit but I've near enough always had breakdown cover. Nowadays I do too many miles not to have it, couldn't be doing with breaking down 300 miles from home and not having a guarantee of a way home.

Broke down after my newly converted 1.6 died. I only drove 0.3 miles problem was conversion wasn't at home. So was about 10 miles from home. Told aa to bring low loader turned up with toe rope scraped shit oura paint trying to get the massive hook on my towing eye.
Run out petrol once, dad saved me.
Got towed to a garage from home (after above happened with 1.6. Took about 5 pieces of wood to get me on te truck.
Breakdown is shit on low cars

I had a driveshaft pop out due to the cir clip no being put back in when fitting a new joi t problem was it was in the middle of a multi-storey on a Saturday had a mate drive 20 miles with all the tools and said missing cir clip found on floor in his workshop come fix it he then cross threaded the end of the joint so castle nut wouldn't fit quick trip down to pound land and a file later job done

Me & my brother in law broke down a few weeks ago on the motorway in his escort. Turned out it was his tesioner, we slowly lost power ina matter of minuets
