the corsa will be left to rot away come september next year, so i am looking for ideas on small hatchback FF cars that -
a) commute well
b) cheap(ish) to maintain
c) are good track cars
d) insure well for a 22 yo with clean licence n history
so far thought of 172, 182, ph2 saxo, fiesta mk6, maybe anther corsa?
the main issue being that most of the above are getting old now, and therefore are mre suseptble to rust etc, any advice / suggestions or opinions? i know some have owned cars in the above list for track etc (gav, graham, andy)

Mx5 can be made to look non hairdresser but don't think they will be that cheap to insure, they are group 17 in new terms.
Although they are great fun..

stupid mentality really as its perfect for his needs, fits better then any of the others hes suggested anyway
easier to maintain then the clios
more reliable then the saxo
cheaper then the fiesta and better handling

what does yours weigh ?
saxo will be quicker and more fun as will the clio
some of the clio 172 phase ones have lsd i heard some were

i reckon my puma is quicker now its stripped then my 106 gtis but yeah if you strip them then they will be quicker
as for fun, puma easily matches them on that and handling

Astra 1.8 hatch/coupe (z18xe version), might not be as fast as some of these little cars mentioned but they handle very well with a few suspension mods!
MK4 Astra best handling Vauxhall I've had tbh and never went wrong.

a) i do 33 miles a day to work and back.
b) nothing usually goes wrong mines done 149k just usually rear beams get play
c) havnt used it on track but its completely standard suspension, steering feels tight and turns nice into corners, out performs and corsa i have had on handling.
d) im 22 with 6 points 1yncb £1k to insure
i dont think ive had any peugeot that has ever rusted! they dont normally rust apart from 205s
(no pumas or minis though)

what about the major just problems the pumas and fiestas have with rear arches and sills?

Dont know why you would want a 106 or a saxo, slow from the start, atleast with a 172 you know you have a bloody good base to start with

it didn't say no pumas when i put it moron it's a fantastic little car.
coming from a focus st i thought it was going to feel dog slow and not handle as well, but it handled much better and even though it wasn't as quick, i felt i could attack corners easier and faster.
it's also much more fun with the predictable lift off oversteer and if it does go wrong, parts are cheap as chips and in abundance so not a problem to repair.

what about the major just problems the pumas and fiestas have with rear arches and sills?
my arches and sills are completely rust free, hence why it'd be a perfect base for someone.

vts or gti slow to start with even tho they are only a 1.6? and a clio is 2.0
ive only got a 421 on mine and still manage to sit side by side with a 182 clio
