Finally the S3 gearbox has given up
Basically plate between first and second gear sheered and drop into the syncro and damaged the 1st gear
So its going to start adding up
Apparently its a common problem but the first I have heard or come across

Yes Jim, before 2001 cars never got old or broke.
I still really like these, is this classed as bad/wrong?

i'm telling you seri fi reli, car manufacturers dont' want a car to last much more than 100k these days.
would rather sell everyone a new car that they get rid of every 3yrs. There's no heart and soul in the middleclass car manufacturers now. More about money now.

But they made the S3 in the 90's and they're part of the same group as VW's, so whats your argument?

looks like the owner is maybe fixing it himself, just buy another gearbox, slap it on.
if he is scared that all the gearboxes are going to have the same problem then i would sell the car.
Any car will have an expensive component fail at some point, its whether the owner would rather fix it, or jump ship and take a risk with another car.

Of course it is.
Would you class a car from 2001 as an old car?

some people believe the way to avoid the problems is to buy a brand new car, then they have to sacrifice performance because they can only afford a bottom to mid range car.
its a tough world enjoying cars for more than a means to get from A to B.
