One of my friends just bought a 2007 335 coupe and after having a drive I must say I was very impressed with it. Effortless smooth power, no lag at all and wafted its way up to silly speeds very quickly.
When I took the Scoob in this Morning for a dyno healthcheck I got speaking to one of the technicians about the 335 lump and they said that with a Map on standard engine you can expect +60bhp and +100 lb/ft torque. iirc that would take it to 360/400 ish?
Begs the question why you would have the M3? I dont know much about the E90 M3 although I imagine it is a completely different rear axel.
Thus my question what does the E90 M3 offer over the 335 from a performance/handling/brakeing point of view?
He paid 16k for a 2007 335 coupe with only 45k on the clock which I think is superb value. The M would be at least another 10k on top of that.

Supposedly a lot more focused, everything will be designed to make it drive that much better. But I can see why people go for a 335 and remap when they are those kind of prices. Hard to pass up.
You would have to ask yourself how often you would be able to realistically notice and use that extra bit of something that the M3 has? Comes down to the individual at that point.

I got laughed at when i said about the 330/335D instead of an M3. When there remapped they are not far behind, all limited to 155 but with the D's you get like 35mpg instead of 15-20mpg or whatever an M3 does.

I was talking about the petrol 335. I expect the 335D would have absolute monster torque when mapped.

I know but there isnt much difference between them. Some engines the diesel is actually faster due to the torque. I know the 330D remaps to around 500 ft lbs of torque on a standard engine.

If given the choice of both cars, which one would you go for? 335, or M3?
In terms of speed, yes, it can keep up. But, with overall desirability, the M3 does it all. Especially the sound

why do people buy a golf when a hyundai does exactly the same job?
looks/desirability etc etc, plus the m3 has a v8 engine and looks stunning.

But because its an ///M3, its £10,000 more.

i can't comment on them being ''almost the same'' as i haven't sat inside one/driven one, but from outside they look totally different. the M3 is wider for a start and has much more road presence than a normal e90.

Its probably because the slash slash slash M3 does everything that wee bit better, which in turn, makes the over-all drive a whole lot better.
I bet if you were to drive both cars, back to back, you would probably notice a massive difference.

Dont really know much about BM's... but the M3 E90 is a highly strung V8 isnt it?
The 335 sounds more like a wafty torquey cruiser....
If you want fun go for M3
If you want comfort/sanity etc etc go for 335

If all you go on is the power of a car, then you'll never understand the difference between a diesel 3 series and an m3.

Are all 'Higher Spec' on the M3.
Its similar story to the Corsa D VXR or SRI turbo. Could easily have the same power but its the Extras that makes the VXR that much more desirable.

Im not just talking about power. If you read Seths post he is asking if an M3 is really worth an extra 10k over a 335 with a remap which would keep up with it.

It wouldnt keep up with it. Perhaps on a 1/4 mile drag strip.
The M3 is a Drivers car.

Yes you are? You just contradicted yourself in the same sentence. You said a remap will keep up, which is a true point, but only in straight lines. The M3 will have had hours and hours of testing to make it handle as best as it can with the power going through the car and has plenty of other toys along the way to help with that.
