small PC. The case is a cube shape probably no more than a foot square. It has a built in motherboard, usually with onboard sound and gfx. Depending on where you buy them, all you need to do is add RAM and a processor. Maybe a hard drive. You can have a much better system than a laptop, for half the price, and they are portable ( but not like a laptop).
Also check out getting a TFT screen ( 15" or 17" )

You buy a shuttle as a barebones system, basically it comes with the case, psu, heatsink iirc and motherboard. Everything else you need to buy yourself...

I got it from microdirect.co.uk - hurry , they're on offer again this weekend only - £233 inc vat
I got the cpu and ram from komplett.co.uk. Im running it on the onboard video at the mo, which isn't too bad. I'll probably get a graphics card over the Summer
I'm well impressed with it. Only thing is the PSU fan is a bit annoying, - but Im changing that for a silent (14dB) one soon.
And it's the nforce2 chipset, with dual channel ddr. There's some issues with certain types of Ram when using it with the onboard video apparantly. But Twinmos is what most ppl recommend, and Im having no problems with it .
XP2600+ /333
2 x 512 Twinmos pc2700
80 gig 8 meg WD HD

I'm not sure, it's not a hugggge drop, when I got mine at the end of March I paid £243
I don't think MD would build it, you get it all in a nice sealed box... I may have seen somewhere tho, may have been overclockers.co.uk where they sometimes fit bits for you. Somewhere like overclockers.co.uk - but I've heard lots of ppl have had problems with oc.co.uk - when trying to return goods.
The Shuttle comes with the case (obviously lol) , the psu, the mobo, onboard graphics, onboard lan, firewire, usb2 ports, all the fans, (includes heatsink and thermal stuff too- so no need to buy cpu as a retail package).
All you need to add to make a fully working system is the HD , cpu and ram. Which is good as there's no hurry for to buiy a graphics card - with the prices dropping as they are.
See the specs here http://us.shuttle.com/specs2.asp?pro_id=163
There's linkage to some reviews too from there

XP2400+ is really good value at the momment in you aren't into overclocking, the barton 2500+ isn't much more either.
I built my own computer, and went a bit overboard with the fans... I'm wating for my new case to arrive, and a zalman for my 9700. Silence here I come
Mikeboy: What are your temps like?

You can buy shuttle bits from NASA. I think they're located all over Texas

41C is decent for such a small case
I have a *shudder* Globalwin 802, modded with 4 120mm fans, 31C idle But it sounds like a hoover. I'm swapping it for an Antec SLK3700

31c idle, about 36c load (toast). It's currently an XP2000 (Tbred A) running at 1909mhz (166x11.5). The fan on my northbridge heatsink stopped for some reason, so I had to lower the vdd voltage and so I had to lower the fsb to get stable again
Nevermind, with my new case I'm trying to keep it as quiet as possible, and then a xp2400 should be going in soon, or a DLTC XP1700, (as they are mental overclockers if I can find one), so I can get some decent overclocks
