Right, at the moment I have an old school Xbox 360 in white with a 60GB (I think) hard drive.

The DVD drive is fucked on it (laser), I can get this sorted for around £30-£50 (I know I could sort it myself but I haven't the time due to work). I have sorted out the heat issues with the console by applying new thermal paste to the CPU and GPU and given it a general good clean when I bought it a few months ago off a friend.

I am considering getting a 360 slim, but I don't know whether to justify £130-£200 on a new console just because it's new, smaller and colour wise matches the other AV equipment we've got.

I have the following questions for you console nerds:

- if I buy the 4GB version, how easy/cheap is it to upgrade the hard drive on it?
- apart from the HDD and the gloss finish, is the 250GB version any different internally to the cheaper 4GB?
- is my 360 worth much secondhand?

Thank you Internet friends.

Yeah, just open the case of the old drive and take out the hdd inside. That'll slot right inside the new slim.

Oh and yes, slims kick the ass of the originals if only for the difference in volume! They're very cool and the only complaint is from my mrs that when she's dusting it's easy to press those touch buttons it has and pop the drive open and shit

Just thought I'd ask because I was reading something online earlier about having to download some kind of signature file to put on the drive?

Not had that problem yet, quite like the touch buttons, the annoying beep sounds should be able to be turned off though

The touch buttons make it feel like a more premium product than the original imo

Might go for the 4GB version then if I can still use my old HDD in it.

Another question - Microsoft won't ban me from XBL for using my old drive would they?

Is it just the DVD drive thats broken on your old one? If you decide to go with the new xbox i'll have your old one for a reasonable price

No because it's still a genuine Microsoft product

Yeah but it's against their terms of service to take apart the casing that holds the drive in, hence my question...

Not that I actually go on XBL (yet)...

Tim - the drive works but the laser needs replacing as it won't read some discs (scratched or immaculate).

Sam, can you tell me why you read EULA's and Term's of Service?

I don't think I ever have in my whole life.

Worth mentioning the 4gb slim doesn't come with component cable for HD, only the shitty yellow/red/white lead, so you'll need the HD cable from your old xbox or buy a HDMI lead.

Tim - it's a Lite-On drive I think.

Brett - I use a HDMI cable on my existing 360 so I'll just use that on the new one if I get it.
