I have been looking at e36 m3 evos for a while but now I kinda want an e46 (nothing to do with grahams thread honest)
But is there any common problems with them to worry about? I know about the boot floor cracking and rear springs snapping.
Are they stupidly expensive to run? I know tyres aren't cheap etc.
Really cant decide between a e36 and an e46

Only other to add would be smg issues, most of which are simple fixes now there is about of knowledge about them. Good cars to be honest

Running costs vary wildly between the two.
No doubt that the E46 is superior in pretty much all ways except steering feel and running costs. But you pay for it.

Like any performance car they aren't going to be cheap to run. Consumables like tyres and brakes are going to be much more than a "normal" car and it's going to eat through them faster too. Then you have to factor in fuel, tax, insurance etc which are also going to be more.
I'd imagine, although I've no experience of this, that spares like bushes, ball joints and other wear items will be similar priced across the range but it's easy to get that sort of info off factors like ECP/GSF etc.

I'd love a 106Gti! Lol.
Bushes can be costly. Probably the same between the two. The E46 is circa £900 for 4 tyres whereas the older one is £400-500. Brakes are hideously expensive on the newer one.
I'd love an SMG E46.

I had read on here about the tyre costs, probably you that mentioned it Brakes are £400 for for pads and discs for the front which I don't think is too bad.
I think I would prefer a manual over a SMG.

Im just reading through that, the main problem seems to be the rear subframe cracking and it appears to be quite common too.

Had a quick look online and can get the parts for £400 for apparently genuine discs and pads.

Don't worry about what costs could occur buy it u only live once . If it's costing too much sell it . Everycar could cost thousands to mend but could also cost minimal . Ok tyres but in all fairness theres some good budget tyres about now . The gap is closing with tyres IMO

Tyres are expensive but I don't drive to work so don't do many miles and have use of a work van (well until the other lad wrote it of last night )

Was speaking to a mate last week after i made one look like it hit reverse, he had 2 m3 E46s, one his and one for his mate, but his for some reason was a hell of alot quicker, even though nothing wrong with his mates, may be worth test driving a few before buying.

Sounds like a dodgy vanos system if it's slower than it should be.

The way I looked at it, it was a 40-50k car when new, if it goes wrong it's going to be expensive. But in the meantime, it's clearly going to be an amaxing car all round for them to charge that much in the first place.
Tyres I can vouch for being expensive, but you'll only need to replace the rears mostly.
Do what I did & just do it whilst you can or you may regret it a few years down the line. For me it's a car I've always wanted to own so it's worth every penny

both cars checked out the same matey< mates had quite a few e46 m3's and has seen a few slower ones than others, even thought mechanically nothing wrong...may just have something to do with one being screwed from day one and one being looked after abit more maybe

I'm sure not having the inspection service plays a big part?

They are known to lose power from the factory over time, differ in age at all? But as you said servicing or a "tighter" engine probably gave it the edge
