Technically, no tint is legal on the fronts. Even a light smoke will take it below the legal limit.

apparently, according to the not long retired chief of road traffic for Durham police ANY tint to the front other than factory is illegal. rears dont matter at all though

Still illegal, and you can get a prohibition order over them/forced to remove them on the roadside.

Speaking from experience when i was stopped on Manchester ring road.
