x 0 = 0

0 + 1 = 1

the answer is 1.

You do the multiplication first so it becomes 40 + (40 x 0) + 1 = 41.

If it's 41 there should be brackets in there surely?

Doesn't matter how it was phrased though, see the link above, if there are no brackets, multiplication is done first.
