I think your struggle big style to find a half decent 306 for 4k....Most I looked at were at LEAST 7k+ and that was for a poor condition one. Escort, rover and punto will fall into that price though

Mk 5 escort cabs are a really dissapointing drive.
Mum has a rover 216 cabriolet, honda engine so very reliable and very tuneable, it drives absolutely mint, rear discs, pas etc, 4 sport seats, well within your price range too.

Think you can pick up a MX5 for about 4k nowadays. Some have 1.6 engines as well.
