i've been driving the fiesta for a while now and it seems i have to thrash the balls off it to make it go anywhere (1.25 16v 82ps).

if i sit at 60mph i can get 50mpg but whenever i reach a hill it drops a lot because it doesn't have the power when you just feather the throttle.

i'm averaging 31mpg over the last 1,000 miles and 80% of my driving is on a dual carriageway.

in contrast,

my puma (1.7 16v 125ps) was averaging 35mpg and was being driven hard, but obviously didn't need as much full throttle due to having more power and less weight.

what i'm asking is whats the best compromise? i can't involve diesels as i've never owned one, so basing this on 2 petrol cars from the same marque.

50mpg*

My puma never went under 30 mpg the whole time i had it (being 18 use to drive it like a mother fucker 50% of the time).

What do you mean is the best compromise? Sell it?

high power/low weight
low power/low weight

that sort of thing.

can't sell it yet, can do in april, but it's not my car anyway.

It's engine dependant.

Some heavier cars will get better mpg than the equivalent engine in a lighter car.

More power if you ask me as you can use its power to progress with little effort.

I use to get 31 mpg on the way to work (doing speed limit all the way) which is 50% and 50% dual carridge way in my megane f1

Depends where the power is though. If the car has a high power band than that rules that theory out.

PD130 tdi has savage low down torque so dont have to rag it to get the best out of it and with a six speed box its awesome.

Best 85mpg 18 miles at 50mph
Average 54-63mpg 1400 miles
Around town 38mpg 100 miles
Lowest 24mpg 15 miles thrashing it about

How can you have an average of 54-63 mpg over 1400 miles? It's one or the other.

sorry was a bit vague, took a rough figure of miles and stated the kind of mpgs i get over it.

Say i looked at my speedo every 1400 miles it would read between 54 and 63mpg.

That's good!

My A4 07 170 tdi gets:

43 MPG sat at 80 - 85
40MPG with 75% motorway
37MPG with 75% town

It's running custom code stage 1 so pulls really well but the DPF kills MPG

Anything above 70mph the mpg tails of pretty quick lol.
Weird thing is a remap on the pd engines seem to see a better mpg result, the decat also improved mine.

Downside is when you remap is the dmf damage and the tendency to plant your right foot.

I've gained around 3 - 5mpg from the remap.

Guy said as long as you do more than 50% motorway driving per tank you'll be fine.

Fingers crossed.

I usually get between 28 and 36mpg over a tank (normally put in about 42 litres), so big engine and small car is where it's at imo
