Right whilst im waiting for my MLR account to be verified i know a few people on here are in the know. things to look out for? running costs? best model to go for etc. Just want to know as much as possible really. The car would be a weekend toy so about 5000miles a year tops. Specialist insurers will obviously be better but anyone in particular?

Sky insurance are awesome for me on a IX. Best quote for miles.
Running costs are horrendous, as expected.
Servicing £2-300 every 4500 miles or 6 months for a small one.
Parts are expensive.
Heavy on the juice when on boost.
Reasonably comfortable interior.
Extreme handling.
Head turner.
1,000,000 smiles per hour.
Majority of VIII's will be showing age and wear and tear, unless it's very looked after. Total buyers market too. They've depreciated like a rock off a mountain.

Make that S-AYC
There're lots of models available and everything depends on your budget. If you're serious about getting a good one and don't mind high price and insurance, hold out for a FQ340 MR. You can get 300/320 for much lower in price but its not quite the same for some reason
I insure with Pace Ward and they gave me a great deal on my policy.
MLR is great if you use the search function and they're all real helpful.
Most important fact to consider is if you have to ask about costs and don't like spending money on fuel, maintainance, insurance, modifying and general running, DONT BUY ONE. Its all or nothing with Evo's but fuck me they're awsome, heres my pride and joy:

wtf? so people shouldn't buy one if they want to know how much it'll cost to run/maintain? seems a bit stupid.

There just realistic Ben.
Tbh there not that expensive to run and I ran mine as a daily for just over a year. The servicing every 4.5k miles isn't as bad as it sounds as 90% of that is just oil changes so the same with most high performance cars. Petrol consumption is laughable tho but amazingly the wife managed over 300 miles to a tank in mine running 350bhp but she is very sensible lol. The comment about most of the 8s being a bit tatty is far off IMO. A look on mlr proves this as most of them have been owned by enthusiasts. Parts are cheap as a lot of owners chop and change there cars so there's always something out there. Insurance was good for me but as I'm over 30 it should be.
When it comes to which model then it's all down to preference. I bought the 300 model as I was planning on modding the car and with simple stage one mods it was quicker than the higher spec models.

it isn't being realistic at all.
how will people know what they cost to run and whether they can afford it, if they don't ask?
the only way to find out is by researching.

The ones that don't know what these cars cost to run are pretty clueless then. Everyone that I know knows without even owning one there a wallet raper.

Nothing stupid about it, its a fact. They're renowed for costing lots of money in pretty much every way possible. Why do you think most of them have loads of owners to them? Its because people jump into the ownership, soon realise they can't afford it and sell them on. Sure, you can buy one, don't bother keeping up with the service schedule, run it on red diesel and rag it round like an old Transit but don't expect for it to last long and don't have high hope for selling it for a reasonable price. They are high maintainence and require the highest of care and attention for a reason.
If you think you can buy one, run it and keep it A1 for a small budget, then don't buy one because it won't work. You find me an Evo 8 with high miles and no service history that'll sell for anymore than £8000.

That's not quite what he said though is it? How do you know if you are well off enough to own one unless you find out how much they are realistically going to cost to run

exactly tom.
i didn't say anything about running it on a tight budget so unsure why you think someone would do that just because they're asking how much they cost to run and maintain.

eh?
and yes. the skoda will be for sale when the time arises.
I know full well they're an expensive car to own, i was just asking for an idea of how much tbh. i'm in a nice position of not relying on having a car and have a fairly disposable income so i think i should be ok with one

If he went onto a Evo site and asked that same question, everyone would say "If you have to ask, don't buy one" If you're into cars, its common knowledge that they're use lots of fuel and cost lots to insure and you have to service them more regulary than most cars. I wasn't trying to put the lad down, I was simply making a point that was realistic.

Disposable income and weekend car? Then you're laughing.
It's impossible to say Lee. You know the facts about them so lets just say it will cost lots.

I think its one of those situations that if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it!

if you have to ask you cant afford it?
or it is just nice to know so you can budget and see just for reference how much it might be costing you and maybe compare against other vehicles.
is that what mitsubishi do on their specs and printing material? leave the MPG bit and service intervals blank because you shouldnt need to ask.

Mine was very reliable as I never fixed a failed part in the year I had it. The serious big bhp ones tho are a different story lol. The ones I've read about all suffered gearbox/transfer box issues.
