Wikipedia are going to shut down for 24hours in protest over it too.

I think even WordPress are taking part in this too (the website that is - don't worry your WP based sites won't simply shut down for 24 hours or anything )

Yes and no. Can understand it from the point of businesses losing money over films and music tbh.

While that's correct, SOPA and PIPA have been set forth in such a way that they will effect legitimate business, damage innovation and stop new business. Yet, probably won't actually do much to stop piracy.

It's very easy to get around the Wikipedia blackout if you can't do without it for 24h

It says all that on the wikipedia SOPA page..
quote: Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way?
Yes. During the blackout, Wikipedia is accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. You can also view Wikipedia normally by disabling JavaScript in your browser, as explained on this Technical FAQ page. Our purpose here isn't to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it's okay for you to circumvent the blackout. We just want to make sure you see our message.

SOPA was infact passed on New Years eve, quietly by Obama. shocking.
However they've re-reviewed the DNS control of the bill and decided to remove DNS blocking until another review in Febuary.
Its a sad state of affairs. If it doesnt get added in this bill, it'll be added to another shortly.
Whilst we're on the discussion of passing bills, NDAA is also shocking.
Indefinatly detaining suspects without trial or substancial evidence is outright illegal and a breach of the whole justice system.
They want shooting.
Whilst the NDAA should only affect terrorists (which is not true), after reading This its changed my perspective of quite alot.

Looks like the online protest has been working.
quote: By 3pm Washington time millions of people had already voiced their concerns. Google just reported that more than 4 million people signed the petition on their site, and the EFF says that 250,000 people sent messages to Congress through their site. These are just two examples of the many initiatives currently being organized.
Seems quite a few of the senators who were co-sponsoring have backed out now aswell.
