So, had a conversation on another forum about buying my first track day car, and also asked on other forums the exact same questions but,

I've got around £7k to play with, and I not going to rush into anything. I want to look around a few peoples projects and it may even be after attending a few events and shows before I finalise what I want, and what direction to go.

At the moment, I looking for a Hatchback. I'm used to FWD and I think that (after ALOT of advice from Ian) this is the way to keep it!

Options I like the idea of (with some more help) are:

- Clio 182
- Fiesta Mk5 Zetec-S
- 106 GTi

Any other cars you can think of that will be of interest to me?

What would you buy and do with that money?

Anything I've overlooked?

Cheers

With £7k you could probably buy one of each of your options

I know of a v.special 106 gti that is an absolute track weapon just about to go up for sale.

I'd buy it, if I had the space to keep it somewhere.

The spec is:

106 gti
High compression pistons
Kent Cams
Remap
4 branch manifold
Decat
Pugsport exhaust
Air Filter thing

XSi Shorter final drive gear box
Quaife Limited Slip Differential

Bilstein suspension

R888s

Not sure how much he wants, but I wouldn't expect it to be much. If I was to buy it, I would strip it completely, fit a cage, bucket seats and throttle bodies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fmxP5iaD0s This is that car, before cams / remap / high comp pistons / r888s and quaife LSD, so you can only imagine how much faster it is with all those bits too. Absolute track weapon.

That is lavly mate! I bet it shifts too!!

Still room for improvement as you say, with stripping and caging, then ITB's.

But as I've said, I'm not looking to rush into anything, going to keep my option open

Although, if you buy a car which is already prepped, it won't lose much money while you own it.

So it's not so important to get the decision right because you can sell it on without too much regret if you want to swap about.

I will stress by the way, this £7k isn't necessarily to spend buying the car. It is hopefully something to get me on the way to getting it up to track standard

Yeah, I've been looking on motorsportads.com etc Ian, and inquired about an '02 mini on there
Seams a cheaper way to go about it

Why do you want to spend so much? I'd always have in the back of my mind, you can't push it too hard.

However this is a extra £500.

But I would get either, a phase 1 172, or 106 gti. Like you save get it up together.

Depends what you need to get. Do you need a trailer or a tow car?

If it was me it would be a clio or a 106

I just sold my 106 that would have been perfect.

ITB's
Gotech ECU
Newman's PH3 cams
Raceland manifold
Pugsport 2"
GTi-6 brakes
Polybushed

Friend of mine has same spec and his is 173bhp so would have been around that, thing flew! Sold it for £1720!

Had a few niggly problems like petrol gauge didn't work and had a slight oil leak.

Would have been a perfect track car, just with the ITB's was a pain in the arse to try use as a daily car!!

Question I'm thinking of is

1) have you been on track before?

If no,

7k is a massive budget to spend and maybe not like going on track.

I'd be thinking of buying a tidy ph1 172 as they're good to go from standard. Plenty around for 1.5k. A car like that wil give you good experience.

If you do like track racing that much after a few, either sell the ph1 and loose hardly any money and buy a more expensive/already prepped car with you nice budget.

I guess that's the thing, it's better to get a cheap / slower car, and get good at driving it, than get a fast, expensive, sorted car and doddle round.

Ian shows what can be done in a car with not that much power, when he takes his puma round

As the lads have said.. If you haven't done many track days... Buy a cheaper car and keep most of your money to one side (eg, a Valver corsa or something along those lines to get used to it). Once you are used to doing track days then upgrade.
If you are after jumping straight it with your current budget then this is bang on budget and worth every penny I think... And you could probably chip him on that price a little.

mk1 focus rs for your budget.

mate went on a trackday at brands on sunday in an impreza wrx and said the focus was very quick around there, had a few choice mods though.

also said the 182's were flying also, good cars, especially when stripped, theres nothing to them.

that astra is perfect. already done.

if that went for £1200 you could probably crash it and still get most of your money back for that price.

I would look at Clio cups and DC2, if you are keen to build something i would look at Mk1 focus and turbo engine, shells are dirt cheap and good base model to start with.
