what would people recommend for a 16 mile round trip journey, country roads, hills etc. ?
I used to ride to work but relocated about 8 miles away, so want to take it back up this summer.
Anyone else doing this?
I am currently looking for a cheap road bike to get me started and so i dont lose much money, don't really mind what it looks like, im not for one for joining the elite bike crew
Curently got a Claud Butler hard tail that cost £450 but hardly use it and getting it through the cycle to work cheme 2 years ago, hence me not wanting to shell out a too much this time.
Does anyone know any good second hand sources apart from ebay/gumtree?

The majority is on 60mph roadds narrow roads with no run off, the type where buses have to go 5mph to get past each other. Some pretty gradient hills too, maybe 15%-20%
My hardtail has massive rocky tyres on and the gearings a bit fucked, might flog that to help pay for the road bike.
Since when has bikes cost £400 for entry level? An alright bike for £150-£170 second hand for me to test the water is what im after tbh

You could just fit road tyres to your current bike? That's what I've got on mine - 1.6 wide rather than the fairly chunky 2.1's that were on it.

You wont get pedals on most bikes after you start paying about 900-1000. Logic behind it is if your buying a road bike for over a grand your going to be into it enough to be riding clipped pedals. And if your paying over a grand for a full suspention or hardtail bike. You will be int it enough to have a deecent knowlage of what type of pedals you want to ride. Or have your own to put on anyways
Also. Road bike would be alot lot lot easyer for you. Would half your travel time. Yer you could get just some hybrid commuteing type tyers for you mtb but the fact is the gearing and the positioning just isnt as good
Look for last years trek 1.2. Should be able to get one for about 200. If you can find it in a tripple chainring set up then that would be alot better for you as your just starting and have some hefty hills

I have Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres on my mtb for road use. They are a big improvement over chunky off-road tyres, but ultimately a road bike/hybrid would be the answer.

Some of the raleighs are good, if not a little heavy. Which model?
