all depends on what you got them for on how they effect your insurance and obviously only allowed 6 in your first 2 years of driving
i got 3 for failure to comply with a road traffic sign (TS30?) and they didnt effect my insurance at all
i went through a 'buses only' but it was actually an emergency (i never take that route and it'd shave loads of time on a daily basis)
i also got pulled over and told i was geting another 3 for overtaking on double white line... sent my licence off... came back without them got lucky i suppose

Currently have 6 and looks like I'm due another 6 next month, hopefully after 3 of those drop off next month.
It's usually 3 years for regular speeding ones to come back off.

I got three for using my mobile phone (not even to make a call) WHILE STATIONARY at the pumps. I'd just filled up - put the keys in the ignition, turned one click to check my trip computer (as I log how much I filled up by and how many miles I did since I last filled up on my phone - when my mpg starts dropping I know it's time for service). The Old Bill pull up behind, knock on the window and tell me that it's an offence to use a mobile phone whilst in control of a vehicle on a public road, even when not moving.
I argued that a) The engine wasn't on and b) I'm on a GARAGE FORECOURT FFS. But legally, it turns out, that you're in control of a vehicle as soon as the keys are in the ignition, and a garage forecourt - even though the land is privately owned - is considered a public thoroughfare as the public drive through it.
Must have been a slow day. Luckily my insurance company (Admiral) didn't give a fuck, and my premium stayed the same, so not all bad.

3 years the count towards total points then expire
4 years can be removed from license
have to tell your insurers for 5 years
(ie 2 years after they expire after the 3 year period you are supposed to still tell them)

Sp30 in August 08. Should be off now.
Did a speed awareness course last month too, waste of 4 hours of my life!

I had 3, TS10, long gone now though. Got removed off my license when I passed my trailer test last year but they expired a couple of years prior to that.

3 for using a mobile phone that wasn't switched on. so technically just holding it at traffic lights. can't prove i wasn't using it, even though it had smashed to bits on the floor and the battery cover was knackered, screen cracked etc etc. wankers, although i shouldn't have given them the option by having it in my hands really.

Didn't you show them it was a broken phone? Surely the cunts can't do you for holding a phone that doesn't even work.

yep, they claimed that i could have thrown the back away and the battery on the seat to try and get away with it. sadly, can't actually argue.
