i know there are a few on here.
thinking about having one.
would replace my evo,
cant decide either the turbo, or 2.2
would be used for track days if that has a bearing on it.

Either tbh.
Turbo is slightly more initially than a 2.2 but with the difference plus a little you could supercharge it which would hive you more power than a standard turbo.
Turbos are easier to tune £ for £

how much roughly to supercharge it, and how reliable would it be?

Aupercharging is super reliable as its actually a 2.0L gm supercharger they use on the american cobolt, its exactly the right size etc to go straight onto the z22se engine. No special adaptors or anything.
Costs about 3k ish
You will get about 220bhp and 190ftlbs
Standard car is 145bhp, standard tubby is 197bhp and the vxr is 220bhp

If i was to do it again id buy the 2.2 leave it bog standard but add in
Closer ratio box from zaffy
R888's
Decent coilovers
Uprate the bushes
Some good brake pads
With all that not much will pass you on a trackday.

I see. Lol
I think ive driven most varients of 2.2's and turbos at various stages of tuning.
I do like the surge you get with the turbo but there is a bit of lag regardless of what the turbo owners say. The most fun ive had on track was a stage 2 supercharged with standard tyres and suspension.
It wasnt anywhere near as fast as a setup vx on sticky tyres or fancy suspension but what it was, was just fun! You were driving it to the limit with the car understeering, oversteering, really grabbing it by its plums and working the car hard.
Dont get me wrong.. A good setup vx will be faster but sometimes (unless your chasing times or someone at a similar pace) can start to become a bit boring as it will always do what you want it to and it wont catch you out.

The turbo will have no lag compared to an evo
If you can afford a very good NA or a cheap turbo, get the NA.

What's the difference in performance between the tubby and non tubby? I want a vx to replace the s4 but the turbos seem to be a lot more expensive so might go down the na route. Do they feel gutless or not?

adam if your going to combe you could jump in mine
leon.
the tubby will out perform the 2.2 in terms of out line speed, the tubby will do 140mph the 2.2 125/130 ish maybe the 0-60 on paper is 5.5 for the na and 4.7 for the turbo
depending on track they are more of less the same on a twisty b road i would recon the na might just have the edge..
with 300bhp in mine i have had an indicated (gps) 150mph and it was still accelerating.
0-60 i have timed on a performance box down to 4.0 dead in greasy conditions i believe that without the wing and splitter and a decent day i could pull under 4 seconds and about 9 seconds (if not quicker) to 100mph.

If i was to build it again from scratch i recon i could do it for £20,000 (car £6000)
But with everything ive spent inc things down to wiper blades, oil and bolts £32,000 (car £10,000)

So the 2.2 wont exactly feel gutless then just seems a fair few k extra for the tubby which I could save.

Ive had the 2.2 in a Mk4 Astra and a Vectra C (albeit the more powerfull Z22YH), and both cars had some go to them, certainly not gutless, so can only imagine an N/A VX220 being quite lively. Have quite a nice, unique engine note too.

Can only compare the two engines in Astras but I did feel the 2.0 turbo had less low down power than the 2.2.
It's not lag as such, but the 2.2 did feel nicer where the 2.0 was off boost. Not sure if this is what Chris is describing.

This might give an idea of the speed of the 2.2

Thats not much different to my vx220 then, that evo (7 i think) Lisa had was pretty much standard and didn't do anything till nearly 4000 rpm! My car seems to be just under 2000 rpm but your going plenty quick enough by 4500 ish.
