Ok, so i dont have a mad scientist, and even worse my apprentice has buggered off somewhere sunny for two weeks leaving me deal with this..
So its not a corsa - or even a vauxhall but it may interest some..
Early R8 V8 - 2007 iirc thats a little bit of a hero at work, mainly due to it being a daily drive for the owner on about 80k in 5 years.
Unfortunately it was recovered in today beltching out white / blue smoke... Joy
So i compression tested it - healthy on bank 1 - all around 13Bar - bank 2 - not so good - lows of 9.6 iirc.
So dropped the 'sump' to find some large chunks of metal and plenty of fine swarf in the oil.
The owner has agreed for the engine to be removed so i can take the heads off and see whats going on. Hopefully we can get a decent contribution from Audi as it looks like its going to need a new engine pending the head removal..
So only pic of today - i will upload more as i progress if theres any interest

I am leaning towards maybe piston rings - the thick smoke cleared quickly and ended up being a constant blue after a while - i have had unconfirmed reports the car had an oil pump at some point, so the engine may have been damaged due to low oil pressure and finally gave up - but i need to check this.
The metal i found in the sump didnt look like bearing material so possibly could be ring. Either way the head needs to be removed
The Covers are good - nice and thick - they can be joined and completly wrap the car!

i had similar the other day, all be it on a new astra j, 5 miles and it was smoking like crazy.
block not cleaned after machining= massive scores in the bore and rings toasted.
was nice ripping apart a brand new car though.
have pics of many a mangled vauxhall engine.
r8 looks a much tougher prospect.

Sounds like an expensive fix, I wouldn't be happy if my r8 engine was buggered after 80,000 miles.
Do you get some special warranty for such cars when you buy them ?

Same as any other new Audi really. If you have a service book full of Audi stamps they might contribute to repairs like this though but it's at their discretion.

I doubt very much the owner will be footing the full bill

Not to argue with somebody who actually works at Audi but...
are they not just standard 'Wurth' plate holders that a large majority of recent Audi's are fitted with from the dealer these days? Don't remember working on an R8 or any other recent Audi without them tbh.
On topic again, interesting thread!

Ok, so i got left alone for once to get on with my work..
Started stripping the car etc so i can remove the head
Rear bumper off:
Silencer off:
Then found engine oil in left bank exhaust - more evidence of a problem this side
Anyways - onwards etc - Lid lock frame off - and another frame out the engine bay etc - both carbon sideblades off so i could undo the engine ECU (x2) earths
Interior stripped so the internal loom and tracker wiring could be fed into the engine bay
Few more bits and bobs off etc - fluid lines off, ac drained etc etc - engine ready to come out
And out
Removed the cylinder head on the left bank - didn't look so good both sides down the inlet..
So it looks like the bores have worn (they dont look that bad from the picture)
The special coating on the bores have visably worn, and scores are visable and can also be felt with your finger nail. Turning the engine over by hand reveals that oil is being left on the bores so unfortuately its going to need an engine
As i left it this eve
On the plus side we had our 3rd GT delivered today - number 131 - spyder - very cool, carbon screen surround and rear deck lid vents also carbon

GT =
And at just how much has to be stripped to remove the engine - don't envy you doing that at all! Guess not it needs a new engine, it's a waiting game to see how much Audi will contribute towards it before going any further?

indeed - we are hoping audi will contribute heavily towards the repair - the guys owned the car from new and it has never been inside another garage except ours
Yeh, its pretty burried in there - it was out by about 3:30ish so thats about 7.5 hours to get it out - the A5 i did in the weeks was out in under 2

Split me.
How much does Audi charge per hour in the workshop? £150-200?
Interesting thread. Well done for documenting it. R8 or A3 you wouldn't expect a failure at 80k. I'd be expecting some sizable contribution from Audi if it were me.

Indeed - considering the block is pretty much RS4 80k is too little for wear
Its a shame these engines cant be rebuilt as such.. would have been a decent job
Labour rate is £120 + VAT (£144 p/h) at our place (i think it may even be the same across all dealers
