I'm intent on heading over the water in the coming years to study Motorsport Engineering in either Swansea or Oxford and I need to know weather or not you need French to get into either university? I have to choose my subjects for next year in a couple of days and I'd like to ditch french if I can. Cheers!

We speak and write in English over hear so French would be pretty useless tbh.

You defo don't need French for engineering. Do maths and physics as a minimum though.
I'm doing mechanical engineering now and I'd recommend that over Motorsport engineering

Surely someone planning going to Uni should be capable of checking what's required for the course they want to do.
Or even applying some common sense and wondering wtf use french would be for your engineering degree?

You need French for English universities and English for Welsh ones, if you want to go to a Scottish university then you will need to know Welsh or Celtic as I believed it's called, it's all part of the new Euro nations coming together.

I did check the requirements and all it said was Maths and Physics were needed. I wouldn't have bothered posting here if I had saw I needed French but I wanted to check with people on here before I did anything in case they had omitted French as a requirement.
French is no good outside of either France, Belgium or some former French colonies in Africa, but a friend of mine did a degree in mathematics and he needed French to gain entry.

I hope to fuck your right! I'm intending to work for either M-Sport or Williams F1 so I don't need French there neither!

Tbh I remember what it was like at school at 15, lots to think of and consider. And the way they go on about languages at gcse you'd think they're more important than they really are

I remember what it was like at school, I picked the uni's I fancied going to and looked in the book to see what was required.
I took great pleasure in going to show my English teacher one of my offers stating that I couldn't use English for one of the required grades

I study Motorsport in Swansea Met and there are plenty of Irish folk doing the courses. There is a direct ferry from Swansea to Cork (I think) which may be handy for you. Only language you need to know is English/welsh valleys style English and you will be fine!

French? Seriously? I know plenty of people doing engineering and maths based subjects in Swansea who can barely utter a foreign word.

Most unlike CS to take the piss where it doesn't understand the question
French or any foreign language at that level is used to display an aptitude in those skills, specifically vocabulary and an additional range of grammatical expertise. Its not because there are French people there who you need to meet and greet.
And if you can't use English in the points count, it's because there's already a consideration given to the L2 qual, ie. GCSE A-C and they want to see a bit of diversity in the higher level subjects which demonstrate a commitment to that degree choice.

Give the guy a break and think back to when you were 14 and how important GCSE options were to you.

Agreed
However, you might as well walk out into the street and ask a passer-by. What you need to do is either look on the website or phone them.

Did you need modern languages for your engineering degree?
