been using normal 95 ron fuel since i bought the car. just put some tesco momentum (99 ron) in and wondered if there was any point doing so?

i used to run my focus on it and it ran a lot better/smoother but was more smokey.

unsure whether theres any point using it for a long period in the z4.

Supposedly better MPG. I always used V Power in my 182.

M54 Engine

- The engine is able to adjust automatically to all fuel grades between 87 and 98 octane.
- Anti-knock control automatically adjusts the engine's running conditions to the respective fuel grade and quality.
- Please note that the engine's maximum output is only achieved when running on 98 octane premium fuel.

FYI I run mine on normal super unleaded, don't usually bother with VPOWER

I dont put 95 in.

nice little bit of info there, cheers.

i thought tesco momentum was 99 octane though?

feels quick enough with 95 in anyway.

The sticker inside my fuel cap says use 97 only.

I doubt you are making the full 231bhp going on that information but I guess it is probably negligible.

good point.

does the engine adjust straight away or would it need a few tank fulls before you get an increase in power?

The knock control would retard your ignition timing on 95 octane I would have thought.

I expect pretty much straight away or it would not be a very good system.

thats what i've always been led to believe. it's a lazy 3.0 engine that isn't high strung in the slightest, but just wondered if it would make the car run smoother/less smokey/better fuel economy.

You can still get det on an N/A engine although the risk is much less when comparing to a high output turbo application. Any modern engine should be able to adjust via knock control to fuels with differing octane ratings. They really would be minor adjustments in ignition timing.

Won't make any difference performance wise but meant to be better quality fuel, better chemicals etc probably less silicon

tbh I've not noticed the difference in mine? Seem to perform the same and both seem to cause detonation at certain revs under load.

Although thinking about it....I've never actually brimmed a tank with high octane fuel, only like 25 litres at a time, so I guess it's not a proper test.

Evo mag, tested the last M5 on super and it made about 2hp difference. The reckon the BMW's do a good job of adjusting the fuel so no point.

On the other cars it made a big difference.

I run 97RON in my BMW 330 and I get 40 miles more on £40 quids worth of fuel over standard 95RON and for my car that's a gallon and a half of fuel so £6-7 of fuel....

Thats not bad. Certainly makes up for the extra money it costs.

Think i'll run it on the better stuff for a month and see if I notice any difference. (about 3 full tanks).

My findings were fairly accurate in terms of I tested over my drive to work (30 miles a day), same route, same weather conditions, same driving style, I tried 3 fuels, supermarket (proved worst by far for fuel economy, worked out more expensive than using 97ron) 95 was my control, then 97RON was where I consistently found far more MPG.
