Yo!

Looking at getting a 172 as they are not to badly priced now, will just be used as a daily hack and commuter (work is 6 mile round trip)

I am looking at the bottom end of the market, wanting to spend around 1500-2000 max,

What were the differences between the stand 172s and the Cups? am i right in thinking that the cups where brakes, sus and a few other upgrades?

What are they like on fuel? will i see 35mpg out of them? also do the Cups cost more on insurance?

any advise on what to look out for will also be good

Phase 1 or 2? Cups had no abs, traction control and were slightly lighter? Dont know about non cups but the cups came with the same sort of seats you would find in a 1.5 dvi dynamique!

mine used to average 30-35mpg which I thought was pretty good for what they are.

make sure the belts have been changed as thats pricey!

both mine were normal 172's so not sure what extras the cups did/didnt have

Looking at phase 2 i think thats what they are, not the blob head lights one the ones like a triangle?

Yeah I've looked at a few cups on ebay and didn't like the interior i thought the interior in the non cups was nicer?

As said make sure the cambelt has been changed with receipts as they are about 400-500 to get done

Yeah easily see 35mpg. Great little cars and the most reliable cars ive had.. On long runs i can get 42mpg.

Ive got a ph1 for sale now, and had a ph2 cup previously. Actually prefer the ph1 to drive. more reponsive. but the look of them is a love/hate thing.

Major service is exactly that, major.
It's best having the dephaser done so makes a big job bigger.
Consumption is annoying at times from what brother and mate moan about

5 years or 72k, seems rather high for a belt ?

It's meant to be a cramped job and therefore either engine out or spend ages trying to do it in the tiny bay.

Cambelt is 70k, my local garage charged me 4 hours labour (plus the price of a genuine cambelt kit) and they lol'd when I told them the Internet told me it's a 'specialist job'

nice one ta!

I currently use a 106 as a daily hack, thats £80 per 6m tax, and very good on fuel, but its a pile of shit, no PAS, i just have to weight up wether its worth spending £1500 on a new car just to drive the 6 mile round trip and the od bit of shopping in town. I will still keep the S2000 in the garage for weekend fun.

Great cars.

Look for exhaust mounts, engine mounts, gearbox mounts and weird electrical issues like airbag lights coming on round corners etc.

They arent cheap to fix, and as said belts need to be performed via nasa technitions in a hermeticvally sealed factory at 20,000ft above sea level or the car will explode and kill your children. Or just take it to a\ competent mechanic to do, depends how internet you are really.


You wont be dissapointed, fantastic cars. Miss mine all the time.

oh mine usded to do 27 mpg giving it death or 35mpg driving like a saint. 40mpg on the Mway acheivable and all hve digital climate etc
