I've been looking over my options for a new car for over a year and still can't set my heart on something.
Sometimes i think life is short buy something fun and quick, then i'll think about just getting cheap runarounds, then i'll think about getting something newer to save on repair bills, then wonder about getting a diesel, then comes up the question of hatchback/estate/saloon/4x4/van, etc...
There's arguments equally both for and against almost every option covering price, fuel economy, use of the vehicle, mileage, pay outright or finance, insurance, etc.
I just wanted to know how did you decide on your cars? More so your second or third cars as first is usually governed by insurance and price. Is it just a case of going with something that "tickles your fancy" or more sit down and look at the pros and cons more closely?

Value for me. I got my Seat Ibiza Cupra after my Corsa because they were good vfm. Went well, looked good, good to insure, and all for a decent price. So the whole package was attractive at the time.

I always go for hot hatch's
Fun to drive which is important to me, Cheapish to run (vital as I'm renovating my house and money is a bit tight) and can fit dogs/mates in etc

I make it up as I go along, quite literally.
When I do finally decide on the actual car I want I still make it up after that, whatever budget I have in mind is normally increased by the time I've got something.
Then I get bored and sell it 6 months later, so probably not the best tactic.

I dislike most cars, not because of the cars, but the owners and the reasons they have the car.
Cars aren't hard to fix, just bolting bits together really. People lack effort and guts these days.

Can't be that easy or you would have bolted that shitty Carrado back together by now.

Pick a model that looks good. Wish I could buy the most expensive/most powerful one.
Realise I've not got the money to either buy or run it and pick a cheaper option.
Basically.

My old Corsa, the best spec I could afford at the time.
Current Corsa, it was free
Primera, it was under £700 with 6 months tax and test and I needed something that day.
Next I want something comfy that can tow well, I've got my Corsa for fun so that's no longer a priority in a daily.

Same tbh.
Loads of realistic cars i still want to try, Clio RS, ERST etc, but the other half isn't that keen on most of the cars i like.
Always manage to talk her round, but the ERST option has never looked too good.

I guess I go for looks, not in a pompous to say look at me but in the design process, something crazy, unique, sharp or has character.
Rover Mini, Alfa romeo 159, Nissan Juke, Fiat coupe etc.

All the points being made so far are why i'm struggling to decide!
I've got a works van for commuting so any car i choose would be evening and weekends BUT i go away a lot during summer so would be doing a few 100 mile trips whilst towing a trailer.
I could get a sensible car such as a diesel estate but then why not have something a bit more special or fun as i won't be doing that many miles? But then do i go for a van for practicality as i'd probably use it for quite a few things that you couldn't with a car? I could just keep going for cheap cars buts then they break more often once the mileage and age gets higher, so do i just pay more for a newer car and save on repairs and hassle?
I've looked at everything from Escort vans to an E90 325i Autovogue to Astra VXR's to Audi/VW estates.
There's a lot i like the look of but nothing more than others really as every category has something nice. I just can't seem to decide whether to go for a sensible all rounder and get a good car or get a great car and just compromise on somethings in the name of fun and only being young once!

It really is bad Jambo! Everything makes sense but at the same time nothing does!
Is that through test drives Nic or just through work?

Test drive similar stuff from garage. Saying that the 330d was more purchased as it was cheap for its year and had everything I was after. I actually wanted a Saab at the time.

Whatever I fancied at the time
With the Audi I wanted something cheap and eco on the juice whilst respectable to look at and not dog slow. Fit's the bill perfectly aside from the dents but cba to fix it atm

We have just purchased an 11 plate 2.0 tdci mondeo zetec with quite a few toys on it.
The way our decision was made was due to the fact the Astra estate we had clutch went and didnt seem worth spending the amount it was quoted on a car with 97K on it.
We also base our decision on that it has to be big enough for camping stuff and 2 dogs. The mondeo ticked all boxes and the fact that the vauxhall salesman was an utter cunt swayed us towards Ford.
