Hadn't heard about this.
Won't be pulling me away from gmail, it probably would have if they'd brought it out 5 years ago though.
A bit late to the party. Got myself a good email address anyway just in case.

I've not logged into Hotmail for years, so this isn't supposed to be a sarcastic rhetorical type question - but how does it differ from Hotmail?
I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is it a rebranded hotmail and hence gmail competitor or does it offer something unique/worth looking at?

It's like gmail except from microsoft, not a re-branded hotmail.
Same old same old, just done better.

Aye thought so, the article referenced Hotmail quite heavily at the start so I wondered if I'd missed anything significant.
Like you, this sort of product isn't something I'm going to bounce between competitors due to the nature of it. It would have to be very innovative for me to make the switch from googlemail now after these years.

Still looks like it is very hotmail linked - for example changing settings takes you to a live page which tries to kick you back to hotmail on completion.
Looks nice, but very late.

Typical Microsoft fuck up!
Clicking the name in upper right corner gives access to "Account settings".
Not a word about forwarding.
Clicking the cog gives access to "Email settings" here you can set up forwarding.
Why the fuck would I need two different types of settings? Just put it all under settings FFS!

Seems like everything is the same apart from the UI - as Andy said the settings page takes you to the same as Hotmail.

Are the people saying that settings takes you back to hotmail using an old hotmail account?
Anything I go to using the new outlook account I created keeps me in outlook.

I tried to get my name last night and it had already gone in most of the decent variations.

So it's just Live Mail with a Metro skin. Ugly as hell if you ask me - how do I get Live back

Sign up to get an a good email, won't be swapping from gmail though.
It's not live with a skin, it's apparently built from the ground up.

That's nice that they've built it from the ground up, but it's still 'Live with a different skin'.

The skin is much better then.
And to get live back just login to live?

Hardly worth going back, its going to be swapped over by default, so you may as well get used to it

Remember to use Email Settings and not Account Settings...
I got a little carried away and took three good addresses. All forwarded to my Gmail, but still unlikely I'll use them...
Though, I did get my initials @outlook which is a fair bit shorter than my Gmail.

Interestingly, on Outlook.com they count a . (dot) as a character.
With Gmail, if you have username@gmail.com you automatically have user.name@gmail.com as well.
With Outlook, those are two separate accounts.
