40x0 would go in brackets, although don't 2 positives make a negative? In which case it would be 39.
I'm very tired though so probably have that wrong.

40 + (40 x 0) + 1 = 41

Two negatives make a positive, but not the other way round.

Exactly. Just missing the brackets

It doesn't really need brackets though. Convention is that multiplication comes first however it's written.
Brackets obviously clears it up though.

I didnt get taught this stuff at school, bearing in mind I left school 18 years ago.
The answer to me says 81. But I know that's wrong.
But only because I know it needs brackets in there somewhere and the reason for posting this question is to make people look stupid.
Answer is probably 41.

Two negatives make a positive, but not the other way round.
But only when they are being multiplied - if it's simple subtraction then they keep their signs.

I'd say B.O.D.M.A.S. is a fairly fundamental part of mathematics that you should know.

It's basic stuff that you expect people to know but I cant recall one moment since leaving school iv had to use it, I'd say that applies to most people where maths isn't part of there jobs etc

Always start with the numbers in the brackets.
