I cycle quite a lot and my quads and calfs are noticeably bigger than 6 months ago but some of the guys i ride with are fucking ridiculously strong/powerful when riding hills/springs and have quite immense calf/quad muscles.
Anyone know the best exercises to build these up?
Thanks
Rob

Not that I am an expert, but aside from strapping weights to your legs I would say you would need to use the machines.

As Russ said, explosive squats, dont grind it out.
Plymoteric style exercises like box jumps to help build up too.
weighted lunges, walking lunges, deep and controlled lunge.
Hamsting exercises such as bent leg curl.

Set up a little circuit with 20 burpees, 20 lunges (each leg) and 25 weighted jump squats. See how it goes from there. If you can do that 3-4 times, no rest between exercises but rest after a round, up the weight/reps

Hills and sprints are different disciplines all together. If you put on loads of muscle you will find sprinting improves but I imagine your hill climbing will suffer a bit.

ride the bike tbh; push yourself passed your comfort level up hills etc. Ride sitting and up out of the saddle to use different muscle areas

Squats or you aren't confident on the technique involved for these go for the leg press. Look for the picture of Chris Hoy leg pressing!
