My 3 series oil warning light came on last night low oil. Cars only done 5k miles, service due in 14k according to the trip comp.
It's a petrol, is it strange for a petrol to need oil after 5k miles?

Most new cars will use a bit of oil, wouldn't worry about it personally.

I thought it was normal for diesels to use some oil but not petrol.
I've never owned a brand new car before right enough.

take it back to where you bought it and make sure its not a warranty item/sensor thats failed
worst case they will let you know for certain if its using oil and why

New cars do use a little bit of oil for the first bunch of mileage. But not enough to warrant an oil light coming on, I'd do the above and take it back for a check.

So they just rely on a sensor? That's a good idea BMW

Most new BMW's are like that now, not a fan myself. Wonder how many warranty claims will go in for blown engines due to faulty oil sensor.

Normal oil consumption on BMW petrols is 2k to 5k miles per litre
They are designed to use oil.
If you have a service pack oil top ups are free

BMW know they have a captive market, so they will keep getting away with stupid shit like this. Great position to be in.
In a few years they will be selling them with no engine for more money so you can just have it sat on your drive to impress the neighbours.
they will still charge you a grand to come and "inspect" it though, but you will get a "free" cup of tea and a digestive

Was the warning light yellow or red?
In mine yellow means it needs topping up, and red means its hardly got any!
Never had red on though!

Mercs have been using that for years, works just fine, until it goes wrong of course.. it should have both really!

It's used a lot on the engines and hydraulics that I work with and have had sensors go faulty or wiring rubbing through and shorting out but there's always a way to check it visually with them

what i want to know is will an instructor fail you on your driving test/or it contribute towards a fail if they ask you to show them how to check the oil and it has no dipstick?

Wonder how many people get the warning light on and think, oh Il go drive to my local dealer for a free oil top up and then never make it there?

Lights not come back on again, feel just slightly bit worried I can't do a visual check on the oil level.

I'm assuming if the sensor is faulty or you are unsure of how much oil is in there, the only thing you could do is drain the oil and fill up to whatever is the required capacity (although this obviously isn't a way to check existing levels).
Who thinks of these stupid ideas? As someone said on here why not have both sensor AND dipstick?

Yeah it seems a no brainer to have some form of duplex redundancy for something as critical as oil in the engine.
However I'm guessing less driveway maintenance increasing in dealer diagnosis and maintenance/repair be the only reason for this.
